As of today, Sunday, February 23rd, there have been THIRTY TWO pitchers go above 98 mph on the mound.

Again…. Today is February 23rd. 32 pitchers have gone above 98 mph.

That’s absolutely incredible for this early in the year.

Lots of live arms. I think the restructuring of the minor leagues and NIL are attracting/keeping more quality players to the college game.

I think the advent of companies like Driveline, specific arm training (overload and underload) and what has amounted to year round baseball has made the guy throwing low 90s average.

Probably not a coincidence.

I hate that baseball's version of the NBA 3 point is just throwing hard as you can and hope the other team doesn't hit homeruns.

Those numbers seem low.  Hasn't UT by itself had 3 or 4 in the last few years?

Who do we have that can even do that.  Spencer?  Moffett?

I think those two have hit 98, and several others have hit at least 97 including Flores, Burns and Mercer.  We have alot more high velo arms on the staff than last year.

1980 45x as many surgeries
1990 45x as many surgeries
2000 5.6x as many surgeries
2010 1.8x as many surgeries

But here is the kicker, pitchers are throwing fewer pitches now they they were in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and even 10-15 years ago. It's definitely correlation to just gassing it down the pipe and not being conditioned to throw as much.

https://www.minnpost.com/community-voices/2024/09/fifty-years-after-the-first-procedure-tommy-john-surgery-is-more-common-than-ever/

The article says more than half of the surgeries now are in ages 15-19.-  " it’s estimated that nearly 2,500 professional baseball players have undergone the surgery, and the number of overall procedures increases about 9% a year. "

This article as well as another I saw somewhere said that 1/3 of major league pitchers have had this surgery.  Seems like a lot but I have seen it twice.  Might be fake news.
