  1. This will be fun to revisit at the end of the season. If you had to pick one team to be the most overrated out of the Top 25 (we'll use the Coaches Poll), who is it and why?
  2. Texas junior quarterback Quinn Ewers has been named to the preseason watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award for the second-consecutive season, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced Thursday. The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. Ewers was selected as a semifinalist for the award during the 2023 season. Texas has had three players receive the Davey O'Brien Award, including a pair of quarterbacks. Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell was the first to do so in 1977 when the O'Brien Award recognized the top player in the southwest, while Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2009) make up the pair of Longhorn quarterbacks to win the award. McCoy was also a finalist for the O'Brien Award in 2008. A native of Southlake, Texas, Ewers is a third-year quarterback who has led Texas to 16 wins in 22 starts in his career. His 5,656 career passing yards rank eighth all-time in Texas history and his 37 career passing touchdowns are tied for seventh. Ewers was also selected to the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. In 2023, Ewers completed 272-of-294 passes (69 percent) for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while he rushed 59 times for 75 yards and five touchdowns. His 3,479 passing yards were fourth-most in a season in UT history and his 272 completions rank sixth. Ewers had six 300-yard passing games, which is tied for the most in a season in program history. Earning the Big 12 Championship's Most Outstanding Player, Ewers completed 35-of-46 passes for 452 yards and four touchdowns, breaking the Big 12 Championship Game record and establishing career-highs for completions and passing yards, while also equaling the Big 12 Championship Game and his personal best with four touchdown passes. Ewers put together a sensational performance in Texas' 34-24 victory at No. 3 Alabama on Sept. 9, 2023, receiving Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week, Maxwell Player of the Week, Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week honors after connecting on 24-of-38 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns to top the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. In the College Football Playoff semifinals versus No. 2 Washington at the Sugar Bowl, Ewers completed 24-of-43 passes for 318 yards and a score. On the season, he had at least one passing touchdown in each of his 12 starts and recorded six games with multiple passing touchdowns. Ewers was tabbed a 2023 AP All-Big 12 Second Team selection. In his first season on the 40 Acres in 2022, Ewers was named honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year by the league's coaches after playing in and starting 10 games. Ewers completed 172-of-296 passes (58.1%) for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while his 2,177 passing yards were the fifth-most for a Texas freshman QB and the 22nd-most in Texas history. His 15 touchdown passes were the fourth-most in a season by a Texas freshman. The official Davey O'Brien midseason watch list will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and will contain active quarterbacks from the preseason watch list, players honored as weekly Great 8 recipients through the first eight weeks of the season and any additional quarterbacks approved by the selection committee. The midseason watch list will be cut down to the 35-player Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2024 on Tuesday, Oct. 29. For the fourth-straight year, fan voting on social media (Facebook, Instagram and X) will earn players bonus selection committee votes during the semifinalist, finalist and winner voting rounds. First-round fan voting will begin Oct. 29 following the QB Class announcement. The list of semifinalists selected from the QB Class will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Foundation will announce three finalists two weeks later on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The 2024 Davey O'Brien Award winner will be unveiled live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards. Ewers and Texas start the season at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday, Aug. 31, at home against Colorado State. The game will air on ESPN from inside Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

  6. lol I’m not saying the Astros are lucky or awful or whatever. Two things can be true: 1. The Astros have managed to do a better job of bouncing back. 2. Injuries have hurt the Rangers in a major way since May and they haven’t been able to bounce back from them for whatever reason. Y’all are acting like I’m saying something completely out of this world, when I’m not. I even said on C&F a week or two ago that they’ve done outstanding.
  7. Injuries are part of the game, but to say they haven’t decimated this team is crazy. During the month of May, the Rangers had TEN pitchers on the injured list at the same time, including six starters and four relievers. As of today, five pitchers are still on that list, including three starters: DeGrom, Scherzer and Gray. Pitching injuries have hurt the Rangers big time this year. It’s something they haven’t been able to shake. It doesn’t matter how much talent you have, if you’re short that many through the majority of the year, including all of your top guys, it’s going to affect the team in a major way Jung and Carter were two huge position losses as well. Edit: went back and looked. 17 Rangers were injured in the month of May alone. That’s insane.
  8. 1. Booooooooooooo to this thread. 2. Injuries decimated the Rangers from the get go. 3. See 1.
  9. Good luck to all the students (and parents) who start back to school today across the state!
  10. Coffee and Football is THE place to be at 8:10 AM. Join Bobby, Gerry and myself, as we talk all about the Longhorns. Plus, as always, we will be answering your questions. Today former Texas deep snapper Jak Holbrook joins the show.
  11. China Springs 2025 catcher/first baseman Dean Hannah announced he has decommitted from Texas. This coaching staff wasn’t surprised by this at all and I would describe it as a mutual parting of ways. Hannah has an 8.5 Perfect Game grade.

  15. I think that account just tweets what they get from media members and message boards. Nothing wrong with that, but I don’t think they have insider knowledge. I could be wrong. 🤷‍♂️
  16. Former high school coaches such as Texas Tech's Joey McGuire and UTSA's Jeff Traylor believe a June Signing Day benefits both recruits and college programs. College lifers such as Texas's Steve Sarkisian, Texas A&M's Mike Elko and North Texas's Eric Morris, however, are opposed. “I think last year, the high school player was not protected, where the signing date was in the middle of December and the portal opened and some schools were dropping high school kids because they were taking the portal kid,” Sarkisian said. “I think now, we’re still protecting the high school kid in early December and then we can get ourselves into the portal.” Read the full story here: https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2024/07/30/fbs-coaches-in-texas-are-divided-on-potential-june-signing-day
  17. Glad you guys enjoyed it. We will have to get some of the assistant coaches on next!
  18. Not sure what that’s about. No commitments have happened or anything.
  19. The Longhorns have added New Mexico State to their 2027 football schedule. Texas will play the NMSU Aggies on September 4th, 2027 and it will be the season opener for both schools. Through a public records request, FBSSchedules.com was able to confirm the game and also confirmed that Texas will pay New Mexico State 1.6 million for the matchup. The Longhorns last played NMSU in 2013, where they won 56-7. Texas will also host both Michigan and UTEP in the following weeks.
