OU fires offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle
AusMOJO replied to Jordan Scruggs's topic in On Texas Football Forum
OSU didn't run him off, he went back to the NFL with a job offer. Saying that he's doing mediocre at Northwestern of all places is hilarious to me. He's calling plays to the talent he has. -

Well they're definitely not hiring anyone good. Venables is the type of DC you hire who thinks he can just win everything with good defense and puts all his resources there. On top of that, they have Jim Nagy who thinks he knows everything and probably has way too much power for a guy at his position. People worrying about them hiring Chip Kelly don't need to worry. Kelly would never put up with that crap and would want full control. If he doesn't get that, why would he bother? At Northwestern he has full control to do what he wants. Which is working. I expect they'll hire another up and comer, give him some discount pieces to work with and then fire him in a few years time. Jason Witten being the play caller is going to be laughable. -
Good stuff. It's a shame it might be wasted.

I have no idea about those people, I'm just saying that people give CDC way too much credit for things. He's a good dude and does his job well but none of those decisions will be his to make. He'll just be the one to deliver the news.

I don’t see Sark running it back with the same offensive staff if Texas misses the CFP. Fingers will be pointed at Flood and Sark as an OC. Long overdue. -
The QB Strategy Next Year and beyond

If Sark opens the QB competition up, I'm not convinced that the 3-star KJ beats out the 5-Star Dia when it's all said and done. -

Mediocre. I've watched them 2x this year against a bad Oregon and Penn State defense and it's not that special. It reminds me of Greg Davis' zone read 2-man passing game offense. And OSU ran him off. Their defense won that Natty for then, not that offense. -

He didn't even stick at Ohio State which is one of the premier programs in the country. He did nothing for UCLA, and on and on. He has not been that successful since he left Oregon where he was a super star, and his offense at Northwestern which I've watched 2x now is nothing special. I think he's way overrated, and Rice is putting up better numbers than Texas so that isn't saying much. -
I doubt Dia would be leaving. He has only been here a year. KJ I would bet transfers though unless Sark can convince him to Mac Jones it, but this day and age with NiL I don’t see it. Next year will be Arch, Dia and the incoming freshman and probably portal a 4th guy with experience as insurance like we have done every year.

They may not be their qb1 to start out. - Today

10 touchdowns in 8 games, or 1.25 td per game. Freaking fierce, hope we keep flying under the radar that way. Also, the defensive leaders and Muschamp need to get after the offense’s a$$ to get their 💩 together and start scoring so freaking points.
-
It's under the radar because the PPG isn't shiny. Thank the special teams and Texas offense for that. I believe the Texas defense is comfortable the #1 defense in the country in the advanced metric of adjusted EPA/play.
-
Unacceptable. Sad. Disappointing. Unsatisfactory. Unsuitable. Discouraging. Disheartening. Depressing. Something in our current model is clearly broken and needs to be fixed this offseason.
-
Listening to all of the national guys the only analysis is whether Texas can score and get explosive plays. No one is making any mention about the Texas defense and what Biles and the crew have done last two weeks and really most of the season. I’ve heard talk about all of these other defenses this week and none of them mention the Texas defense. Somehow this defense is still under the radar to a degree.

The question would be does Venebles let the new OC have complete autonomy on who he could bring in as his position coaches. I subscribed onto a solid OU site off and on for the last few years. I don’t see OU cutting bate with Witten or the RB coach they hired from ND this past year. Also, I don’t know if they finally cut ties with Bedenbaugh (OL coach). Also same thing that happened with Littrell happened with Arbuckle in his second year. They were asked to run things or incorporate things on offense that were not familiar with them. Littrell basically had to try to mix Lebby’s Veer and Shoot with some spread/power concepts. Arbuckle had to mix his Air Raid with two TEs and concepts from Witten and the RB coach. Lastly would BV give a well established OC some control in how practices are run? -

OC for OSU Natty, Look at Northwestern yep that Northwestern offense this year. -
I don’t even know if it’s a strength thing, I think it’s mentality. We got a bunch of guys who want to give defenders butterfly kisses instead of guys who want to kill defenders. It’s amazing that no one has any pride in that room.

Becton needs to hire a dedicated OL coach to ensure functional strength and anchoring. Ask baker which coaches give him trouble. Hire them. so for most, iron sharpens iron but for us, iron creates rust?

Sounds like OU is circling the wagoons. Gotta blame someone.......someone with a low buyout. -
Are you kidding? Baseball is doing a great job...........but so is softball, vollyball, both basketballs, etc. There are 2 things that will get you into CDC's doghouse: (1) not recruiting at the highest level (2) not representing the University at the highest level

Most satisfying win of the year for me. But none of those 3 teams we swept are the standard. We're going to face a Nebraska/Pitt/Louisville type team in either the Sweet 16 round or the Elite Eight round, depending on the seed we earn and whether we win enough in the tournament. None of South Carolina/Georgia, or even A&M resembles those teams. Nothing against A&M, which is coming off two impressive wins against Kentucky and Tennessee (which was a grueling battle - seriously hat tip to the Aggies for outlasting the Vols)., but they're simply not at that level and haven't been all year long. They're not nearly as good as last year when we split against them on the season. -

You mean the 2023 team. The 2022 team only lost to Kansas and looked like a juggernaut for most of the season. We've beaten South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas A&M. None of those teams remotely resemble Nebraska, Pitt, and Louisville. Now, if we managed to get in what looks like the Florida regional, sure. I will give A&M credit that they just beat Kentucky and Tennessee, so they were playing well coming into Gregory. I loved the win. But I still do not believe we have the serving to beat a regional host. And we're still rated as one of the last 4 subregional hosts, so unless we continue winning, including into the SEC tournament, we'll be facing a regional host in the Sweet Sixteen round. It all comes down to serving. Can this team be a better serving team come tournament time? Adding Anderson and Harris - neither of whom are utilizing the top spin jump serve they were showing off at the start of the season - has helped, because we don't have Kujundzic serving any more. Harvey was one of our most effective servers against the Aggies. Even got a nice dig a la O'Neal when she was in the back row, and also laid up a nice assist. That 2023 team was a very good serving team all year long, and simply ratcheted it up a notch. And they still had to fight off a couple of match points against Tennessee in Palo Alto in the 4th set in the Sweet Sixteen round. Same with A&M last year, that barely beat Louisville in the Sweet Sixteen in a match that Louisville probably should have won, then upset Nebraska, before looking dominant in the Final Four. But the key to those teams were good serving. I'm still unconvinced we're a good serving team. We're just better than we were earlier in the year. When going against the top teams, you simply have to get them out of system on a regular basis when you're at the serving line, or you're going to have a series of first ball side outs. We won't face another team that resembles a #1 through #3 seed until the SEC tournament. And I don't believe the SEC has anyone on the same level of the other top seeds. I thought Kentucky would be there, but I don't completely understand what has happened to them, other than they dearly miss Hudson from last year to go with Deleye. "If championships were awarded based on October message-board evaluations, we'd have a lot fewer banners hanging in Gregory Gym." Actually, that's not true. We'd probably have more banners hanging in Gregory Gym. Most of the time we roll through our nonconference schedule and then dominate the Big 12, and are easily one of the top 4 teams in the country. We've ended up losing to some juggernauts over the years, including Penn State and Stanford, not to mention the Elite Eight loss to Nebraska in Gregory when they served us off the court. And on sheer talent we were probably better than the Kentucky team we lost to as well. Having this many losses is pretty much new territory for this program under Elliott since his earliest years.
