Oh yeah, they can totally ask for an inflated signing bonus, or it will be a wasted draft pick (that season). Similar to when the Mets drafted Kumar Rocker in 2021 out of Vandy.

Instead of negotiating a reduced deal, the Mets chose not to extend any offer before the 5 p.m. ET signing deadline. Acting GM Zack Scott said, “This is clearly not the outcome we had hoped for and wish Kumar nothing but success moving forward” MLB+1. Rocker’s agent, Scott Boras, countered that Rocker was healthy per independent orthopedic surgeon reviews and had no need for medical attention ESPN+1.

As a result:

The Mets did not sign Rocker.

They received the No. 11 pick in the 2022 Draft as compensation

Rocker remained eligible for the 2022 draft and later was selected 3rd overall by the Texas Rangers

MLB rules rewarded the Mets for losing Rocker by giving them an extra #11 overall in the 2022 draft, automatically granted the Mets a massive, expanded draft budget for 2022.  This financial flexibility allowed the Mets to aggressively draft and sign high-upside players who slid due to bonus demands.

We knew LSU was going to be motivated we should have done more last year when LSU was in Omaha winning. Least we have the basketball support but makes sense baseball doesnt make money.

I don’t remember Blake saying Texas was looking good for the first two. I remember him saying they visited.

I also never sensed that he thought Laya to Texas was done. He just said Texas vs LSU with a decision expected soon. That should make anyone nervous knowing the NIL support LSU has.

There are several SS/2B types still in the portal I would prioritize over a high level OF if Mendoza truly isn’t returning.

They have options in the OF, both on campus, in the recruiting class and remaining in the portal. And you have a solid floor with Pack and Solitaria.

There are very few options at second base and that isn’t a spot I would bank on a true freshman for.

It doesn’t make sense to me that our NIL for University of Texas is decent at best. Just disappointing to be honest.
