Hookem72 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago This is a terrible deal and idea that they took because they lack fiscal responsibility. Reminds me of the city of Chicago selling the parking meters years ago. 1 Quote

Glass Joe Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago This reads like a cash raise by LSU’s athletic department to meet a short-term (5 year) liquidity target. The “shares” will inevitably be called by LSU after 5 years, as they have no intention of sharing the upside of a new media rights deal in 2031. So, this is effectively a loan from LSU fans to the AD for 5 years. And the lenders (LSU fans) don’t even get donor foundation points in return 😂. 2 3 Quote

I wonder what the guaranteed minimum return is? 10% per annum? 1 Quote

Steamboat Willie Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago (edited) 3 hours ago, THookem said: LSU is trying to solve a math problem more schools are starting to face. Revenue sharing with athletes, rising roster costs and years of coaching buyouts have created a gap that donations alone can't close. The answer isn't just asking boosters for more. LSU is exploring a corporate entity it would own and control, one that invests in outside businesses to generate recurring revenue. Reports that the school already sold 10% of its future media rights for $100 million have been disputed, and no deal has been signed. The trend is still hard to miss. Boosters, ticket sales and TV money no longer cover what it costs to compete at the top, and schools are starting to raise capital more like businesses. Utah has partnered with a private equity firm, and Kentucky, Michigan State and Clemson have all set up commercial arms. Edited 3 hours ago by Steamboat Willie 1 Quote
swilliams773 Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago That's a fascinating model. It'll be interesting to see how it works in practice and whether other college programs adopt similar private equity structures in the future. Quote

HelloThere Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Appears more like they are guaranteeing some investors with equity to create an investment fund that could earn the school money down the road. Quote
