We’re officially 26 days away from Texas football, so today we’re looking back at some of the best Longhorns to wear No. 26.

Johnny “Lam” Jones headlines this group. The Olympic gold medalist was a two-time All-American, two-time All-SWC selection and Texas’ 1978 team MVP before becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft.

D.J. Monroe brought some serious speed to the number during his time on the Forty Acres. Monroe finished with 2,620 all-purpose yards and still owns the Texas record with three career kickoff-return touchdowns.

And Marcus Griffin rounds out the group. A member of the 2005 National Championship team, Griffin finished his Texas career with 229 tackles, four interceptions and three forced fumbles, earning ESPN.com All-America honors as a senior in 2007.

I'm a huge Ty'Anthony Smith fan from covering him during his recruitment but hard to not go with Tre Wisner (who later switched to No. 5). The rival killer will be missed. Also worth mentioning I'm 23 years old and didn't get to see a lot of other 26s who will be brought up

A couple of good choices, but for me I’ll go with Jones. I remember watching him as a teen!

Also, as mentioned, All-SWC, All-American and Olympic gold medalist, that puts him up there!

Johnny Lam Jones was one of the first Texas players I remember by name from seeing a game on tv, after Earl...
I believe he was only like 18 when he won that gold medal too...

Also, IIRC, he was Lam, short for Lampasses. There was also Ham, which was short for Hamlin TX, and a 3rd Jones, Royal called Jam, just because it rhymed with/ Lam and Ham, but Lam was the man...
