Player superlatives (feel free to add)

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to throw some shout out to multiple players after thinking more about the game (no particular order)

1) Quinn - never question the effort.  Yes he needs some better pocket awareness, but he kept fighting, and that flip to Wisner was one of his best plays ever as a Longhorn.  Should always be appreciated by fans for what he has done for Texas.

2) Blue - tremendous as a catching RB.  Could have pouted after losing carries to Wisner earlier in the year but balled out on the biggest stage.  Hope he comes back next year.

3) Golden - our best WR all year, was clearly hurt but kept fighting to get back in the game and did.  Tremendous season.  Throw whatever NIL money we have for WR for him to come back.

4) Broughton - one of the biggest risers this year, had a great game.  Thanks for sticking with it through the years and hope it ends up in a big NFL paycheck.

5) Norton - unsung, but he has had some big plays in the playoffs.  Quietly a fantastic portal pickup last year.

6) Gbenda - great way to cap off the career.  Played with 110% effort.. loved to see it.

7) Simmons -honestly I thought before the game that he won the national freshman of the year because Smith and Ryan Williams split the WR vote.  He proved that he was the correct choice all along.  Looking forward to 2 more years of this monster, who will be one of the defensive greats at Texas if healthy.

8. ) Taafe - what can you say about the scrappy kid that was a walk on and now an all american.  He threw his body into harms way several times, and his emotion after the game is why college football is the best.  Would love to have his veteran leadership for 1 more year, but you go do what is best for you MT.

.. and also one for the coaching spot PK.  He's getting flack for the screen to end the first half, but rushing 4 and having 7 in coverage was no reason for that to have gone to the house.  Yes, there could have been a better call, but his bracketing of Smith tonight was masterful.  any one of you would take 21 points by the tOSU offense if you were told that our defense held them to that number before the game.

Wisner- Got us hard yards and key conversions in critical moments

Helm- Coming up big in the 4th Q when his best was needed (and in 2 OT last week). Arguably the best TE in Longhorn history

Makuba- Setting the tone vs Jeremiah Smith and the tOSU WR corps early

Barron- Solidifying his legacy as one of the best DBs to ever play for the Longhorns by locking up the best WR and passing game in the country

Taafe- Being the heart and soul of the defense/team and the embodiment of a Texas Longhorn

Muhammad- Correcting course from the first two playoff games and playing very well against his best competition of the season

Let’s face it, 40, 50 or more players contributed to the success of this year’s team. From Banks (the best lineman in college football) playing every snap in the OSU game to Vasek’s 6 plays, everyone on the field deserves some recognition. A book could be written about the highs and lows, the personalities, and the character of this team.

One final thought. I think special mention should go to Quinn who overcame injuries to led us to back to back semi-final games. All the while suffering the hateful and vile comments from the so-called fans on message boards (fortunately not so much on OTF) and social media. Just today,  two days after the game, I saw FB posts calling Quinn a choke artist or celebrating him leaving the program. JMO.

Was for the game but nobody will complain about giving anyone props for a great year either.

For the game:
David Gbenda- Having a big INT and a huge stop on 3rd and 1 from a quiter than expected season, ended it right.
Will Stone- Although only PAT's were kicked, he came in and did his job as perfect as possible.
Jaydon Blue- From a very off and on season with quality of play, he gave us horns fans a great finally to remember him by.
For the season:
Quinn Ewers- Allowed me to experience what Texas football is like when competing for a national championship. Starting with GIlbert, Thank you Quinn for leading us out of the dark ages.
Matthew Golden- Matthew Golden ended up being more than I expected Isaiah Bond to me, he was another AD Mitchell and I loved every second of it.
And many others
