Bevo92 Posted March 21 Posted March 21 (edited) 2 years in a row, they were pre-season #1 only to be exited early from the tournament . Kansas seems to have lost its way and their dominant mojo is gone. https://apple.news/AtHjyXV1bTE6J4MzHevijgg Edited March 21 by Bevo92 Quote
qaertyisthatdude Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Rumors are their NIL is not adequate enough to remain a top tier program in MBB. Wild how quickly they’ve fallen off after winning a natty three years ago. Quote

Dickinson was one of the biggest prizes in the portal 20 months ago, Storr, Griffen, and Mayo were highly sought players in the portal last summer, Kansas had to keep Harris happy, and Adams was second in minutes, so I doubt he played for nothing this year. Sounds like a lot of money had to go into that roster. 3 Quote

Dickinson was definitely not cheap and while Mayo may have given them a hometown discount I don't believe Griffin, Storr, Bidunga, etc did. KU went so crazy in the portal that guys they bought from the portal had to back out of commitments due to the roster being so loaded. Riley Kugel left Florida to join KU only to be recruited over before he even got on campus and wound up at Mississippi St instead. 5 star Guard LeBaron Philon was given the Cam Scott treatment because they had to go "all in" this year and he wound up at Bama. They've got National Gatorade player of the Year Darryn Peterson coming in next year and he's not coming for free either. These are extremely expensive rosters Bill Self is flopping with. Quote
harveycmd Posted March 21 Posted March 21 In the postgame, Self admitted they just missed. Didn't properly evaluate. Don't doubt things have changed enough to throw Self off. But it ain't money. Quote

Philon would've put Harris on the bench and he would've been what he always should've been... a backup pg! Quote
ATX16 Posted March 21 Posted March 21 My theory. Kansas and the bluebloods have lost a big chunk of their advantage. NIL and portal in basketball disperses the top talent amongst 200 + teams. One acquisition in basketball can make a difference to your season and everyones trying to play. Pre-NIL/ Portal the top talent was mostly dispersed amongst the blue bloods through HS recruiting and a few transfers here and there. It's going to be harder for the perennial top programs to maintain dominance year after year going forward. Seasons similar to this one for the Jayhawks are going to be more frequent. Quote
Austalgia Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Some of these big time programs were NIL wink, wink, before NIL. Alabama in football, Kansas in basketball, and while we might have had our indiscretions at Texas as well, we weren’t outright cheating with no consequences like other places (especially SEC football, and blue blood basketball centric schools). Enter legal NIL, and of course playing field is leveled. And now people will complain about the rich getting players legally when it was done for years while cheating by other programs. Screw them 1 1 Quote
Moderators CJ Vogel Posted March 21 Moderators Posted March 21 They bought into Hunter Dickinson. 1 Quote
Moderators CJ Vogel Posted March 21 Moderators Posted March 21 On a real note, Kansas was up three with 3:30 left when KJ Adams Jr. went down with what looked line an Achilles and the Jayhawks proceeded to have 5 turnovers and 5 points in the final 3:30. That injury changed everything for the offense. 1 Quote

HookedOnTF Posted March 21 Posted March 21 KU is instructive for several reasons. 1) portal bets might not pay off (Dickinson as a defensive liability) 2) hall of fame coaches can make a difference late in the game - but still need players to execute (losing KJ was the final straw) 3) out atheleting with nba talent is preferable, but not if they don't gel into a rotation with consistency (ku has lost uncharacteristically recently) 4) the tourney is a crap shoot On top of this - it will be interesting to see which schools put basketball first in their their $20M budget. Is it a boon for teams like 'Nova? How much will Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, UNC, UCLA commit to football? Will the outside $ still buy a roster on top of the school payroll budget? All of that makes it difficult for me to have year in year out expectations for our soon to be homerun hire to meet a top 10 / second weekend standard. 2 Quote

Neil Leininger Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Self suffered a heart attack 24 months ago. He's not the same coach he once was. He likely lost his fastball, maybe needs a reset at a different school. Just not here, because I wouldn't want to take the chance on him never finding it again. Quote
TexasFan Posted March 21 Posted March 21 I'm a Kansas fan and His health problem that he had kind of had something to do with it and he's not going nowere he's not leaving Kansas 1 Quote
