  1. I mentioned this in another thread, but CJ and I happened to walk by the Texas coaches coming out of back stairwell in the convention center after Derrek Cooper committed. The staff was very happy, to say the least, and Sark was on the phone with a big smile plastered on his face. Today was a good day for the Longhorns.
  2. Not of the coaches’ lectures.
  3. That’s it for today. CJ and I are posted up at a computer with everyone else, ready to watch the Derrek Cooper ceremony.
  4. Didn’t get a chance to talk to him, but I did see Tyrone Swoopes in the crowd at the coaches panel. He’s an assistant coach at Lindale.
  5. Sark said there’s a struggle between what science tells you about making sure your players are healthy over the long haul and having a physical football team with the kind of edge you want.
  6. Sark said player development is critical throughout the season so that young players can be ready to play earlier.
  7. McGuire said he knows what his players make, but he leaves those discussions with prospects to James Blanchard and the personnel department.
  8. Joey McGuire said Cody Campbell is trying to help college football, not just Texas Tech. McGuire said Campbell has asked the Tech staff to look at an NFL salary cap so they’d be ready to act accordingly when revenue sharing and the “cap” kicked in this summer.
  9. Sonny Dykes echoed the same. He said if the starting left tackles at Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and TCU make roughly the same thing, then recruits will pick schools based on things other than money.
  10. Rhett Lashlee hopes revenue sharing and a cap structure will balance things out regarding what certain positions get paid that schools don’t lose kids just because of money.
  11. Again, not sure what’s being said, but Traylor is cracking Sark up.
  12. Scotty Walden: “I’m trying to constantly make sure with GM that we don’t go over the $20 million cap.” Room breaks out in laughter. ”I did that for the people in the back to wake them up,” he said. “We’ll never touch the $20 million cap at the University of Texas-El Paso.”
  13. Phil Longo’s first season at Sam Houston will be one without home games. They’ll play their five home games at NRG Stadium.
  14. Not sure what Sark and Traylor are discussing, but they’ve had a dialogue with each other throughout this whole deal.
  15. As Sark said earlier today, UTEP’s Scotty Walden said it’s never been more important for high school football coaches to have the best interest of football prospects in mind and to make sure they’ve got a voice.
  16. Jeff Traylor: “We can’t let this turn into AAU basketball.”
  17. Sark said at some point there will be a program that goes over the cap, and he doesn’t want it to be Texas. That’s why Brandon Harris is so important to how the Texas program operates.
  18. Sark’s question is about the function of the general manager in college football. Operating within and managing the cap is the biggest role of the GM, Sark said. You’ve got to divide the cap between recruiting, taking care of the current roster and player retention. Sark said it’s a “thankless job,” but he and Brandon Harris are on the same page and he likes that he’s got someone he trusts in that role so that he can focus on coaching.
  19. Before answering his question on relationships with the high school coaches in Texas, North Texas’ Eric Morris thanks Craig Bohl and the AFCA, on behalf of “all the Mike Leach guys” on lowering the winning percentage requirement for coaches to be consider for the College Football Hall of Fame.
  20. Former Texas quarterback GJ Kinne opens his portion of the Q&A by congratulating his coach at Gilmer, Jeff Traylor, on going into the THSCA Hall of Honor last night.
  21. Dave Aranda said the coaches are trying to catch up to using in-game technology.
  22. Mike Elko gets a question about on-field communication devices. He said the current model is fine with one player on offense and defense having communication device. He said it mirrors the NFL model, which is fine.
