From UT … Weaver named Big 12 Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week Sophomore guard averaged 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in UT’s two victories last week. IRVING, Texas — University of Texas sophomore guard Chendall Weaver has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Weaver’s first career weekly league honor. In UT’s two wins last week, Weaver averaged 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game. He converted 52.6-percent (10-19) from the floor and 10-of-13 (.769) free throws during the two contests. Weaver also was a huge part of the Texas defensive effort that helped limit its two opponents to a combined 38.2-percent (42-110) shooting from the floor, including a 29.3-percent mark (12-41) from three-point range, and post a plus-12.5 rebound margin (41.5-29.0). In Tuesday’s 81-69 win at Texas Tech (Feb. 27), Weaver tied his then-season high with 15 points while hitting a collegiate career-best 9-of-11 free throws and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds to go along with two assists, one block and one steal in 31 minutes. During Saturday’s 81-65 home victory over Oklahoma State (March 2), Weaver set his season high in scoring with 16 points while converting a collegiate career-best 7-of-12 field goals to go along with four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 22 minutes. Texas (19-10, 8-8 Big 12) returns to action when it travels to face No. 11/11 Baylor later tonight. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Foster Pavilion, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN.
