I didn't realize his breakout game as a freshman was against Texas? That career began in 1967, Simpson's first year at USC. In Week 2, he announced himself to the larger college world by running all over the Texas Longhorns. Things didn't start off well for Simpson... At the 10-yard line in the first quarter, he fumbled, leading to an 85-yard Longhorns drive and a touchdown. That'd be the only time Texas would lead for the game. Two possessions later, the Trojans tied the game after Simpson punched it in from the 2-yard line. They continued to feed their running back, controlling the clock and scoring another touchdown courtesy of a pass from quarterback Steve Sogge to receiver Bob Miller. Texas ended up falling 17-14 and Simpson finished with 158 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. While not his best performance of the season, he had carried USC's offense against one of the best teams in the nation. Yeah, I know nobody reads or has access to the Statesman....

Concerning the television ratings of the women's and men's finals, it doesn't help that CBS sticks the men's final on TBS. Being on one of the big four networks still matters with television viewership.

I get the sense that Pierce is asking guys to throw pitches they're not quite comfortable throwing. Way too many walks and HBP. Or maybe we have just really poorly developed staff. Whatever the case, he's the head coach and pitching coach and it's all on him. I also think that losing Philip Miller hasn't helped this team. Again, whatever the circumstances, it's up to the guy making the $1.2M to figure it out.

I took those canceled dinners as an indication they were concerned about pissing off ESPN and FOX not even a year into the new deals. ..but whatever the case, crazy times in college athletics.
