  1. Daughter just sent me an email asking about the symbolic connection between the physical abnormalities of Kurtz and the judge. I told her there's a connection that McCarthy intentionally wrote into Blood Meridian, but the judge is more and less than Kurtz. The judge is literally a god beyond death, but Kurtz is a frail human. McCarthy is using the judge to symbolize metaphysical principals, while Conrad is using Kurtz to symbolize the decline of European culture. Conrad is talking about the decline of Western civilization. McCarthy is trying to link virility to the ascendance of the West.
  2. Don't see how you can make them join a conference. The selection rules for the next CFP agreement need to stipulate that there will be a strong SOS component like they have for baseball and basketball.
  3. Why was it depressing? I remember watching guys on TV literally knock down the wall with sledge hammers. I remember thinking that it was great that I was watching it as it happened, and I understood its significance because I had studied history from ancient Egypt to present day, read Henry Kissinger's memoirs about trying to win the Cold War, but that was it and I was 16.
  4. Someone asked what I was doing in Athens, Georgia in November 1989 if I went to high school in Gilmer, TX. I went there in June 1989 to stay with my best friend. His mom was a professor of Entomology at UGA.
  5. Drove through Gilmer for the first time in a couple years. Reminded of the Berlin Wall falling on 9 November 1989. I was sixteen in Athens, Georgia when it happened. Graduated from high school close to Gilmer five months before. I remember thinking that day that it was the culmination of two world wars, the cold war and the entire twentieth century. The US was literally about to dominate the world. It was exhilarating and depressing at the same time.
  6. Gotta say I can't stand Garry Parrish, Steph Curry, SGA or any other pansy who can't post or finish at the rim.
  7. I should mention we read Milton's Paradise Lost just before reading McCarthy's Blood Meridian. I had them chart the punctuation and meter of Milton and McCarthy. Then they had to compare conceptual schemes. Now, twenty year old girl loves Blood Meridian the most. I'm partial to Paradise Lost, but I did take her to multiple conferences on McCarthy.
  8. Ain't no Aggie or criminal sooner doing that.
  9. I've never seen a single second of The Office. I read Homer, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Al Farabi, Machiavelli, Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Conrad and McCarthy with my kids as the grew up. My youngest daughter just asked me to borrow Heart of Darkness and Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West so she can study over the summer. She's twenty at UT now.
  10. But Nash averaged ten assists per game, so you must give him the MVP. I mean, Magic averaged 14 assists without winning the MVP, but you gotta bow down to the voters.
  11. "He speaks English, Italian, Spanish and Slovenian. Half our players don't speak English."
  12. Jerry West: "I got this kid. He's gonna be the best player in the world. We gonna win multiple titles with this boy leading the way."
  13. Pre-daft nonsense in May 1996 was that Kobe was too weak. He couldn't shoot against defensive pressure. He couldn't beat ball pressure off the dribble. I remember Jerry West saying they're nuts on draft night. He's the best player I've ever seen. He literally beat every player we've put him against, and he's only 17. That's why you gotta trust what you see rather than bs stuff you hear. Of course, by that time I knew Jerry West was more trustworthy than any idiot in the media.
  14. I hope Jonah's starting every game in the postseason.
  15. Even though we lost game two, watching Schloss go out and joke around with the boys before going to Grubbs was great. He's the coolest Texas coach.
  16. Bird was one of the greatest players ever. Against the Lakers he was a liability because of Worthy. Jerry West drafted James Worthy to kill Bird. Now, the Lakers had Kareem and Magic too. But Worthy was the difference on the wing and in the post against Bird or McHale. That's why the Lakers beat the Celtics two out of three in the 80s. West traded for the draft rights to Kobe to kill everyone.
  17. Someone asked me about the defense. You couldn't double at this time. You had to play man. Celtics couldn't defend Worthy man on man in the post. It's not like now where you just pack the paint and switch double or flood the pick and roll. Rules wouldn't let you do that then. That's why the paint is open and there's much more movement on the ball with only one defender. They changed the rule about man defense because the rest of the league got tired of Kobe and Shaq killing them one on one.
  18. Real basketball. Game 1 1987 NBA Finals.
  19. Here's the judge (Texas) explaining to the kid criminal interloper (Oklahoma) why they never won anything without cheating and why all the whining in the world about being outspent in NIL wont save them. I been everywhere, the kid said. This is just one more place The judge arched his brow. Did you post witness? he said. To report to you on the continuing existence of those places once you'd quit them? That's crazy. Is it? Where is yesterday? Where is Glanton and Brown and where is the priest as the pope? He leaned closer. Where is Shelby, whom you left to the mercies of Elias in the desert, and where is Tate whom you abandoned in the mountains? Where are the ladies, ah the fair and tender ladies with whom you danced at the governor's ball when you were a hero anointed with the blood of the enemies of the republic you'd elected to defend. And where is the fiddler and where is the dance? I guess you can tell me. I tell you this. As war becomes dishonored and its nobility called into question those honorable men who recognize the sanctity of blood will excluded from the dance, which is the warrior's right, and thereby will the dance become a false dance and dancers false dancers. And yet there will be one there always who is a true dancer and can you guess who that might be? You aint notin. You speak truer than you know. But I will tell you. Only that man who has offered up himself entire to the blood of war, who has been to the floor of the pit and seen the horror in the round and learned at last that it speaks to his inmost heart, only that man can dance. Even a dumb animal can speak. The judge set the bottle on the bar. Hear me, man, he said. There is room on the stage for one beast and one alone. All others are destined for a night that is eternal and without name. One by one they will step down into the darkness before the footlamps. Bears that dance, bears that dont.
  20. Everybody dont have to have a reason to be someplace. That's so, said the judge. They do not have to have reason. But order is not set aside because of their indifference. He regarded the judge warily. Let me put it this way, said the judge. If it is so that they themselves have no reason and yet are indeed here must they not be here by reason of some other? And if this is so can you guess who that other might be? No. Can you? I know him well. He poured the tumbler full once more and he took a drink himself from the bottle and he wiped his mouth and turned to regard the room. This is an orchestration for an event. For a dance in fact. The participants will be apprised of their roles at the proper time. For now it is enough that they have arrived. As the dance is the thing with which we are concerned and contains complete within itself its own arrangement and history and finally there is no necessity that the dancers contain these things within themselves as well. In any event the history of all is not the history of each nor indeed the sum of those histories and none here can finally comprehend the reason for his presence for he has no way of knowing even in what the event consists. In fact, were he to know he might well absent himself and you can see that that cannot be any part of the plan if plan there be. Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, original 1985 edition, pp, 341-342
  21. Don't know what they're counting. Won regular season football and baseball. Went farther than any SEC team in CFP. That's two out of the big three. Criminal sooners suck worse than ever. Aggies gonna suck as long as Trev runs the show.
  22. Linked The Cult because I remember listening to this as the Lakers beat the Celtics in game six at Boston Garden to win the NBA Finals June 1985.
  23. I don't know. I think if Sark would have switched to Arch during the second bye (just before Florida), we would've won the national championship last season.
  24. I have about an 80 gallon barrel pit smoker I welded out of eight gauge steel. It's a single stack three inch adjustable smoker. I'm using a mixture of oak and cedar to smoke sausage from the wild hog I killed last week.
  25. Dirk isn't even a top fifty player.
