Friday Team notes: WR OnTexasFootball checked in with a couple of sources in the last half of the week on the wide receiver position. One source said the group looked "phenomenal" in the last few workouts. OTF has reported on Emmett Mosley V has looked very good this summer. That was relayed to OTF this week again. A source said the 6-2, 200-pound junior has had the look of a wide receiver that would be a No. 1 at many Power 4 schools the last part of the summer. OTF has mentioned that there is a thought Mosley V could lead the team in receptions this season. That was reiterated this week as a possibility. There is also a belief within the program that Mosley V could be a big ascender in the 2027 NFL draft with a healthy season. The last part is they key, obviously. The toughest task for Steve Sarkisian and the offensive staff this season will be getting the backups, or WR No. 4 and 5, reps if Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley V are healthy and play at the level expected. And to add, Sterling Berkhalter, Daylan McCutcheon and Kaliq Lockett have a freshman Jermaine Bishop Jr. that is very likely to take reps as the season moves along. All three have enjoyed strong summers. As Rod Babers always talks about on OTF shows, Sarkisian has a small circle at the position that play in games. This season will test how many WR's can be included in the "circle of trust", and just as important how many reps are there playing this 2026 schedule. The source said the entire room has been very impressive the last half of the summer. OTF will also reiterate that Chris Stewart came up again as a player that is doing all the right things, and is showing the signs he has the chance to be a quality player. His attention to detail as a route runner have stood out. Kohen Brown's work ethic, strength and speed was mentioned once again.

Basketball: A+ for sure. Football: A for sure Baseball: MLB draft out of their control, but does that knock the grade down a little? They took some hits there, and you can't really truly recover due to timing of portal window. B+ to A-

From my understanding, Baseball was more about retention and adding a few pieces through the portal. I'd say from what I've read from people who know more about it than I do, we knocked it out of the park in that regard. With some talented Fr heading to campus, too. Basketball absolutely killed it in the off-season. Listening and reading Gerry's takes on this has been amazing and has me excited for that season to start. Football filled all of it's needs and then some. Some great additions, good retention and hopefully this translates to the field.

May to July is usually the season of coaches in the Media--or at least the "long format" versions compared with shorter in season availability. Sark made his usual rounds with the various Touchdown clubs, podcast, and media sites. I think he's really good at it. It can be repetitive if you listen to multiple sessions. But he has a lot to say and a lot more than traditional "coach speak." I would give somewhere between a B+ to A-. The only deduction is him having to clarify himself too often--mostly on topics he clearly has thought about and rehearsed and could have self edited better. The player cap space topic is a good example. Of course our rivals ran with that on X with the concept that Texas runs players out of town and has no loyalty. On the Eisen show he clarified that other teams made great offers to some of our players and we declined to match given the other players they wanted to sign from the portal. I give props for him saying this out loud and its of course true that all teams do this. But get that one right in the first place. Before living in Texas, I was in Virginia for a long time and Tony Bennett with their basketball program was, I think, the GOAT for media sessions--always thoughtful, interesting, educational. Too bad he retired early. On the other had, I lived through Bill O'Brien coaching the Houston Texans--the perfect example of coach speak with zero substance. What is your take on high end coaches with the media that make viewing worth our time? Follow-up eval--if having trouble with insomnia, tune into a Dave Aranda press conference--solved..

I'll admit, I'm not the most knowledgeable, so if I missed something or you disagree please feel free to stick it to me. We are nearly through Summer. While they are staggered, we have gotten through much of the off-season for Football, Basketball and Baseball. In each of these, we've seemingly had astounding success, albeit slightly differently in their approach. Basketball: A+ Portal: Major attention, major gains (247 4t, on3 2nd) Recruiting: Less attention, standout additions (Spears Jr.) Retention: Very little, but we only really needed Vokietaitis For the experts, have we ever put a team this talented on the hardwood? I don't think we could've had a better off season for Basketball. Football: A Portal: Moderate amount (most in portal history so far), major wins relative to their necessity (247 3rd, on3 10th) Recruiting: Consistently amazing Retention: Moderate amount in tandem with portal needs With Meredith reclassifying, have we had back to back #1 classes? And, so far, steadily heading to seemingly another top 5 finish. It seems to me that Sark's team building skills have only been improving and that he is very good at adapting with the times in terms of juggling portal, recruiting and retention. Of course he then needs to prove it on the field with this caliber of team, but this is still extremely underrated aspect from a coach and is largely overlooked when evaluating coaches currently. We have not hit the portal as hard as this, and while it didn't fill out the team relative to Basketball, it seems like it will have great ROI regardless in terms of evaluation and need. Baseball: A- (?) Portal: Few additions, great success Recruiting: Personally uninitiated to this Retention: Major Less bombshells from the Baseball side of things with the portal. Although now with Lugo and previously with Armstrong, we have added fantastic talent onto a team we pretty much retained from last season who finished top 5. It isn't in my wheelhouse, but it seems we've done similarly great on baseball if not better than what I've estimated. Each sport attacked this off season differently. Basketball went portal heavily, Baseball retained a lot, Football balanced the two in between. Regardless, it seems that each sport will be set up to be at least top 10 preseason nationally based on talent alone. Of course, we must prove this talent on the field. But man, has there been a better outlook for the next year? Seemingly, each of these teams have reasonable paths to see hardware. Whether that is achieved, I'm sure they will all have damn good seasons anyhow. CDC has got us rockin, all that's left to do is get it done. Hook'em!

Quinn’s most accurate deep ball game/quarter. Such a shame he got hurt in that game. He was rolling and looked so calm and confident. Even made plays under duress. That game makes me stomach hurt because it was winnable even with Quinn getting hurt. I just wish he could’ve played the whole game and see how it would’ve gone. Might have been a career day. Watching him in the first quarter was the greatest QB play I’d seen in nearly 15 years at Texas, thought he would be the #1 overall pick. Also, refs were zero help, safety no call is still all time bad. Oh and Berty boy before half. Please Spetic I’m begging do not miss important kicks is takes years off of my life.

Talent was never his hold up. He’s dripping with potential. His production just never took off for whatever reason. I’m rooting for him. I thought he should have been a late round pick.

That's nonsense. Even the NFL has caps, rules, and boundaries. The problem is that you are equating pay-for-play with NIL. No player has a right to demand pay from a University, but they can earn as much as they want off of their NIL. The only reason the Universities are playing this game right now is they have to because there are no rules. If they want to compete and stay relevant, then they have to keep playing the game. However, they all want rules and boundaries, with a stop on the bidding for players. Sark has commented on this, and so did Saban during the White House round table. Since College Football is a nation wide sport and athletes are transferring at will to chase $$$, then Federal Regulations are needed to set the structures, definitions and boundaries of this new era of college sports. Most likely they will adopt an NFL model with collective bargaining, antitrust exemptions, and a commissioner. This bill will fail because it is not addressing any of these issues. The B1G and SEC will never agree to participate in this old NCAA model.
