Then instead of prepping Gilbert to take over the next year, he decided to change the offense completely away from what made Gilbert good (and what he was recruited for) to try to copy Saban's offensive approach (which made no sense because they had recruited different personnel). It was the complete opposite of build the scheme to fit your players, it was literally force these players into this scheme (square peg meet round hole). Additionally, it seemed like Mack's recruits evaluations started to really slip. He signed players way early in the cycle and considered it done and missed out on a bunch of good players later in the cycle while a bunch of his early high rated recruits tailed off and didn't really pan out in college.
