UTTUCK Posted Thursday at 01:38 AM Posted Thursday at 01:38 AM Back when Mack was hired shortly after they went on a barn storming tour of Texas cities. I was at the one in Houston, after his talk to crowd was meeting people. I got in line, got to him, “ Hey Coach Brown, Mike T}%^, nice to meet you, welcome to Texas. I am nothing special, as average Joe as you can get. Fast forward 8-10 years later, they go on another barnstorming tour. Again I go to the one in Houston. I get in line, get to Mack, and before I can say a word, he sticks his hand out and says “hey Mike, how ya doing, thanks for coming”. I kid you not, I was astonished. I think he has a photographic memory. 25 Quote

Oldest Horn Posted Thursday at 01:31 PM Posted Thursday at 01:31 PM Just one of Mack’s strengths. When energized, he was incredible on the fundraising and recruiting trails. 3 Quote
Alex Butler Posted Thursday at 01:48 PM Posted Thursday at 01:48 PM Truly, he actually talked about that on his pod cast with Vince and how important it is to remember people’s names knowing what a simple thing like that can really mean to others. I wish I had that super power. I can peer someone and forget their name within the same minute 😢 4 Quote

I think he has a photographic memory. This happened to a friend of mine. Met Mack in a hallway in Bellmont and talked to him for about 30 seconds. About 10 years later ran into him again somewhere. "Patrick! Good to see you again." Edited Thursday at 02:54 PM by Red Five 3 Quote
HuntFishTexan Posted Thursday at 05:09 PM Posted Thursday at 05:09 PM Had the same experience with him. I went to his introductory celebration in Austin, and they were running late getting him to the Palmer Event Center. I decided to step outside to satisfy my tobacco habit, and in walked David McWilliams (who I knew) and Coach Brown. He asked my name, and whether I could punt. Fast forward 10 or so years and I ran into him again. He remembered my name and that conversation about punting and he asked if I still had eligibility. I haven't met anyone before or since that had that unique ability to remember faces/names and the grace to joke about things that make someone like me smile a little wider. 5 Quote
jhookem91 Posted Thursday at 05:31 PM Posted Thursday at 05:31 PM That is remarkable gift that he shares with some of our greatest political figures. Like Alex wrote, I wish I had a little of that gift. FDR supposedly could do the same thing, except he could also remember all the names of someone’s family members that he met on the campaign trail several years earlier. Quote
Roysterr Posted Thursday at 05:40 PM Posted Thursday at 05:40 PM My last name is Royall, and I met Mack at one of those Houston events in 1999. One hour later, I asked him a football question in front of a crowd of about 200. He opened up the answer by saying "I"d expect that type of question coming from a Royall" 4 Quote
Hix Green made the Catch Posted Thursday at 06:26 PM Posted Thursday at 06:26 PM Amazing stories...just goes to show that all of us have our gifts and strengths. Thank you for posting that thread☺️ Quote
mcwast Posted Thursday at 07:03 PM Posted Thursday at 07:03 PM a few days before the 2003 debacle in the cotton bowl, i went to quizno's in hancock center with my roommate. i spontaneously got a bloody nose and had stopped it with a piece of napkin twisted into a plug. mack and sally came in and ordered. as they were leaving, i said "good luck, coach." he turned to say "thank you, son" and shake my hand. i'll never forget the look on his face, haha. i'm sure he remembers it. 1 Quote

I wish I had that super power. I can peer someone and forget their name within the same minute 😢 I’m horrible with names - my mind will go blank. A perfect example, in college I introduced one of my closest friends (of about 10 yrs) to a blind date with the wrong name - she knew me & just reintroduced herself; didn’t tell me about until the next day. The worst was when I went to introduce my boyfriend (future spouse) of 3 yrs to someone and all I could remember was his last name (which is what his friends called him) - he had to introduce himself. It’s like the pressure of remembering a name makes me freeze and forget. What makes it worse is I have a very unique name that people tend to remember 😵💫 1 Quote
Longhorngreg Posted Friday at 02:57 AM Posted Friday at 02:57 AM Mack is the best ever at that. My Bride was his nurse when he had lens replacement. That day was her birthday. 10 years later he still texts her Happy Birthday 4 Quote
Waxahorn Posted Friday at 03:37 AM Posted Friday at 03:37 AM My daughter worked for Mack Brown her senior year at Texas. She said that Mack had the gift of remembering the names of thousands of people. I really wish I could do that. Quote

I literally freeze and forget immediately. It happened to me this morning. My way around it is to just make sure I tell people upfront I’m terrible with names and try and drop my name in a conversation as much as possible because I assume others are just as bad as me and I’ve found that folks will actually consciously or unconsciously do the same. What’s worse is I do remember other details about them and their faces so it’s really bad when I can’t remember their name but I remember that they grew up loving horses and tennis lol 1 Quote
Pwood Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I think our brains work the same way- it is so frustrating. And as I get older, it seems to get worse!! Quote
Tim Longoria Posted 48 minutes ago Posted 48 minutes ago Bear with me on my Mack story. Summer before my senior year (2004), I went to the one day camp in June. Of course, I hadn't been working out since school ended and paid for it lol. We did 40 yard sprints in DKR in the mid morning heat and I was wanting to throw up something fierce lol. As I'm bent over fighting the urge, I feel someone put their hand on my back and ask if I'm okay. I hear the voice and freeze up. It's Mack. Suddenly I'm blabbering out apologies for almost throwing up, not being brtter prepared, whatever. He interrupts me and takes me to the trainers to get hydrated. To say I'm embarassed is a huge understatement. We break for lunch and go to the bubble for position drills w the coaches (loved being coached by Bruce Chambers for a day) followed by routes on air and 1 on 1s w the qbs, running backs, and receivers vs the linebackers and secondary. At the end of the camp, us and our parents get to talk to fhe coaches and of course Mack sees me and asks me if I'm feeling better after earlier, and yeah, he does make you feel like you're fhe most important person at that time. I got to introduce him to my dad, who was probably as star struck as I was earlier that day lol. But it was a great day, one that I treasure as a lifelong Longhorn fan. 1 Quote
