“Lost” their QB is also a charitable way to describe Gabriel’s departure. Ditching Gabriel for Jackson Arnold has aged into perhaps the biggest unforced error I’ve ever seen.

I think the question is: Why now? Why do you do this 3 weeks before the season starts? If the intent is genuine, then let him play the year out? It doesn’t seem to make any sense. Is there a desperation factor to lock him down so that he doesn’t leave like Riley left. Clemson may open up after this year, FSU may be on the hunt, USC if Riley can’t produce….Is OU desperate to hang on. I like Venables, but did he earn this extension? Seems to have a high floor but I think his ceiling is capped as a HC. Doesn’t make sense. Why now?

I really don't understand this move from the OU side. What has he achieved to warrant an extension? If you were smart, at least wait until after the season lol.

Also they basically pushed Jeff Lebby out the door by begging Selmon (former Sooner great and current Mississippi State AD) to hire Lebby. Many thought Selmon would become OU’s next AD.

The last time he got an extension was before the 2024 period. I think they knew the transition to the SEC was going to be tough, I also think they (OU administration) know this season will be/could be difficult, and they like the culture and how BV is building the football program, so they don’t want any “hot seat” talk to question if BV has job security if the season does turn out to be disappointing for them.

Fair enough but he wouldn't be on the hot seat either way because he still had time left on his contract. Still weird, imo.
