Texas basketball scrimmage …

Hard to say for me yet...but

1. If Isaiah Johnson were to go down at lead guard. With Mikey Lewis out, that would create real issues.

2. I think opponents are going to pack the paint on Texas some this year because they draw so many paint fouls ... who does Sean Miller have on the court in those times? The best offensive team on the perimeter for that (Ogden and/or Sterling) is also the worst defensive team (Sterling) vs. the best defensive lineup (Evans or Freeman).

I'm sure something else will pop up when watching them play

Great stuff!  Just let spears run point forward if isaiah gets bjrt

Glad to see a Texas coach get the value out of their roster NIL!

Finally something we can cheer for and a legitimate contender. This football and volleyball season have been killing me with the deficiencies.

Basketball season (men and women) can't come fast enough. Can't wait to see the team on TV.

Encouraging perimeter performances in both scrimmages.

I’m just NBA pilled, but I’d like more attempts from 3. That’s two scrimmages in a row. I get there are different ways to win games though.

Atleast one of them did. Other made a business decision and refused to jump on a lose ball with the game on the line

Difference is one coach has exceeded expectations and the other has not.

Texas is going to be like Zona last year IMO

May lead nation in FT attempts ... put a lot of fouls on ooponents

Gerry how would you rank the SEC teams this season preseason wise? Who are you expecting to be good and so on🙏

Oh definitely. I agree on the FTs.  I have some posts early in the portal cycle saying the same thing.  Not sure how to search on here, but I said Texas could lead the country in FTs. They were high last year with Pope not drawing many.

Florida - favorite

2nd tier:

Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri

3rd tier:

Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky

I wary about getting my hopes up, scrimmages are basically practice, and allegedly the football team also practices great and we see what actual game time produces.

Kentucky fans think they are right behind Florida with Texas, Bama, etc. When it's pointed out that they have a combo guard who can't shoot playing PG, and therefore they have the same problem as last season, they simply put their collective head in the sand. They'll go ballistic on Mark Pope quick when they realize their roster doesn't fit well enough to win against good teams.

Arkansas actually has the same problem but worse. They don't have a true center. I think they have eight freshmen, no true PG, no shooting to speak of ... Cal is stuck in 2012. He's still more worried about draft picks than winning. He's the biggest shyster in the history of CBB. As I've said before, he needs to be on a used car lot swindling people out of their money.

Nope. St. John's is it ... and that will be a good gauge of where Texas is at without Mikey in non-con

Watched st John's on ESPN the other night. My hope when they play is that Texas can control the boards.  Thanks for the updates Gerry.

You seem to hate on playmaking point guards. Calipari is elite. He built up UMass with multiple great teams over performing with guys like Marcus camby and Lou Roe. After that had a good coaching tree -- if you don't think John Calipari can coach you don't know ball.

I love playmaking point guards. I'm not sold on the "combo guard" craze. Can it work? Yes, it can work if you have shooting, athletic size and offensive rebounding to make up for the lack PG creation (2025 Florida being a good example).

As for Cal, he's repeatedly stated he's more concerned with name on the back of the jersey than the front. Differently stated, he'd rather have big names go high in the draft than win titles. That's indisputable.

You called him the biggest shyster in history he's a Hall of Famer and 3 time coach of the year at three different universities.

Cal has won one title even though he's had more NBA talent than any coach in history. He's not a good in game coach that knows how to get his players in the best position to win.

If you love bragging about guys being drafted, he's your man. If you want to maximize talent and win titles while watching skilled players execute at a high level, you better go with someone like Hurley.

I'll take a title Harvey, you?

I'd rather have more than one, especially if I've had better players than everyone else for almost twenty years.

This is not news. Everyone in basketball has talked about this for years: Cal's a recruiter, not a high-level tactician or actual game coach. He "sells" dreams, and in general delivers on it at an individual level insofar as he does get many guys to the NBA. Differently stated, he "sells" big time more than he wins big time. That's why he's a shyster.

Everyone would rather have more than one. You're downplaying winning a title. You do realize he has 863 wins at 75.2 win percentage?

Not many D1 coaches go 38-2 multiple times by having poor adjustments.
