No. 3 Texas at Texas A&M Game Week Thread

Recommended Posts

This couldn't be set up any better for us.

Beat aggy,  knock them out of the SEC championship game,  the College Football Playoff and all of this at Kyle Field.

I couldn't have scripted a better ending for the regular season.

The game hasn’t been played since my 11 year old daughter has been alive, but now I’ve finally had to try to explain Aggie to her. It went like this.

 “What’s an Aggie?”

“It’s an agricultural school, so it’s shortened to Aggie”

“So is their mascot a farmer?”

“You’d think that but no. It’s a dog.”

“Why?”

“They just got a dog at some point. Also they dress up like they’re in the military and the dog has the highest rank and when the dog dies they bury it facing the scoreboard.”

“What?!? Stop with the dumb jokes.”

Had to show her Wikipedia and she still wasn’t fully convinced Aggie lore is real.

Now show her the Aggie cheer leaders ...

Key word is IF

8-10 what? Points? Talk about creating a pseudo boogeyman. Sark decides this game. If he continues to try to elevate and toughen Quinn up for the NFL, he hurts the team. Any sprained ankle is highly susceptible to getting reinjured, often worse.

Practice and play Arch. Mobile/strong QBs have killed atm. Give QE 2 weeks for ga or playoff run.

Won’t happen but oh well. I’d rather Arch get this experience in case we need him for the playoffs vs waiting until QE is hurt again.

I finished my first watch of the Sky Cast of the Aggie LSU game, particularly the second half. Notes I had:

- One thing I noticed is that they do a bunch of simulated pressures on third downs, and they almost always disguise coverage when they sim.

- They show cover 2 man pre-snap a lot and run a lot of cover 2 man.

- It looks like they run a lot of match concepts

- Most of the time when they ran a simulated pressure, it came out of cover 1, and they went with man on the backend

- Their secondary isn't great, but they trust their pass rush to get there before the secondary can get beat.-

Didn’t watch A&M yesterday but know they gave up 31 in regulation and 21 in the first quarter.  What did Auburn do to move the ball?  How much of a fit for the Texas offense was what Auburn did?

I love the idea of playing bully ball and running down A&M’s throat but the fumble issues give me pause.

They were really explosive. They went 5/8 past 20 yards in the passing game for 213 yards. Texas will not do that with Ewers at quarterback. Auburn successfully ran it on the right side of the line, not so much on the left side. Texas has had a lot of success running it to the left recently, so it's strength vs strength there.

I don't think much of what Auburn did fits what Texas does, but schematically, I'm sure Sark can find some holes to exploit

Arch won't start unless Quin's ankle is really bad,  but he has proven that he can come off the bench ready to go.

Yes!! Plus might actually work better in our favor if that does happen because they’ll have to adjust big time for Arch’s style!!

Some thoughts:

  • Their QB, Reed, has not seen a D with a pass rush anywhere near as effective as Texas'.  He's still young and has not been in a game this big yet.  Our guys are experienced and good.  I think he will have a long day.
  • Quinn wasn't called on to do much in the 3rd & 4th quarters last week.  He was actually hurt in the 2nd quarter and finished the game on the leg everyone is so worried about.  He will be fine.  For those worried about a backup plan, have you forgotten about Arch?!  I'll put our freshman up against theirs any day.  We will be fine at QB.
  • Our WRs > than their secondary.  We will be ok.
  • If our O-Line protects like they have all year (minus UGA), QE will have time to find his guys.  If you think Sark isn't scheming up hot routes to counter their blitz, you're crazy.
  • Our running game has been getting better and better as the year goes on... minus the fumbles.  Tre has earned the starting role and should be featured this week.  We imposed our will on Kentucky.  Lil Bro's D-Line is better, but not that much better. Our o-line will be fine and we will be able to run on them.
  • Their running game without Moss is average at best.  They will have to throw.  I trust our secondary and our rush.
  • The only way we lose this game is if we lose the turnover battle by 2 and we have several key injuries before the end of the game.
