Hoops: Texas at No. 5 Florida Game Thread

CDC is gonna need to make a change. There’s no reason that Texas should be this hard to watch. Going to waste an unbelievable talent in Tre Johnson (which happened constantly under Shaka as well), and be a bad team. This is the weakest team on the 40 acres.

Saw that. They absolutely quit in the last 5 minutes. Coaching is really bad.

Man, they started it off so well, then we came crashing back to reality and it completely fell apart. Tough game. On the road, against the #5 team? Brutal man. We got bullied physically for most of the game and I was a bit surprised by that.  

Offensively, we started hot but was pretty lacklustre the rest of the way. Not sure what more Coach Terry can do? Would love to read some thoughts from the more knowledgeable Basketball posters.

Is there anything Coach can do to turn this season around?

@512Horn tell me your list of coaches and why they come. Remember no basketball blue blood coach has ever come to Texas. So take those out. Give me your list.

This was an “expected loss.” Yeah they can still make the tournament. Which leads to is that enough? That would be three straight tournament appearances in a row. It’s been more than a decade since that happened. In my opinion it’s not enough. However then you have to talk about who they can get. Which leads to the NIL budget for Texas, which further narrows the list. Just not enough BMDs supporting basketball. Also a small fan base. One guy commented that he wasn’t watching but could tell by the score…. that’s another issue. It’s a lukewarm fan base at best. They show up when football is over and complain. They don’t show up for games and don’t travel. Who’s coming to that?

So you take the blue blood coaches out because no one has ever said yes before?!   We've never been on a coach hunt as members of the SEC.  CDC got us Beard who was the best coach in the country at the time and then gave RT the opportunity which he has fallen short on.  Nah, shoot for the damn stars and make them say no.

Idk who you get but I think CDC needs to blow it up and start over after the season. He has done very well bringing in coaches on other sports so we’ll see.

Penders, Barnes, Smart and Beard did not come from a blue blood basketball school. Remember that coach already has his program running well. Not going to drop everything he has already built to come to a football school. He already has his NIL fund where he wants it. Not coming to virtually no fan base and limited NIL. No blue blood basketball coach is coming to a blue blood football school.

He does an assessment at the end of the year. Will have to see how they finish and CDC can go off that. No point in making a move if all they are interested in is getting to the tournament and giving football fans some time to waste until football comes around again.

Do you think, similar to Baseball, that the right hire for Basketball, could see the NIL/support increase? I know Texas is a Blue Blood in Baseball, but it could help, no? Not advocating for Coach Terry to be fired, but just in a hypothetical instance.

I always believe anything is possible if Texas basketball NIL is based on reality. Right now the Texas one fund is low and football fans are stepping up. Bobby mentioned today that numerous players took less money to stay. That’s a sign of their culture. It’s a shocking statement for basketball fans though. The NIL may be reduced. RT hasn’t had the time to set a firm culture to allow players to take less when others offer more. Throw the portal in which means anyone can leave at anytime and it gets even more difficult.

The “tell me who will be coach” crowd is comical.  As if there aren’t 75+ coaches better than RT.  That number might be low also.

I didn't know that about the NIL Thought with how everyone talks about Texas, our NIL funds would be fine. I get what you mean, sounds like Texas as a whole needs to step it's game up a bit.

Did Barnes have sold out arenas during his glory days? No

Did he have to get a camera installed to see who wasn’t showing up on the lower level? Yes

Did fans travel? No

Texas was more involved then versus the one year Beard was here. Barnes had plenty of arena’s rocking and it still wasn’t enough. And his record dwarfs Beards by a thousand miles.

The Erwin Center held like 5K more than now.  I know you hate Beard but he had everything I stated. It’s ok to admit that.

Someone said on here awhile back that we might as well keep Terry, because there's no way we could attract a good coach. Like we're Sam Houston St. or something. That mindset is so pathetic.

CDC has one real Basketball search at Texas and that was Chris Beard.
