And the beauty of both moving away from grown children and taking your 16 year old away from his high school.

Give it up, guys.

Few

is

happy

where

he

is.

Is he though? I know he had legitimate interest in the job recently.

I'll believe Few will leave when he announces he is leaving.  I wouldn't much mind having him, but I would worry that he'd be an unmotivated guy only in it for the paycheck.  He's a hall of famer with or without a title, and he knows it.

Unless I’ve missed it, nobody has mentioned Eric Musselman. Why not him?? In five years at Arky, he had back to back elite 8’s and one sweet 16 (even as an 8 seed). He would’ve made the tourney in 2020 too but Covid happened. Two of those years, he lost to the eventual national champion. Not to mention, 3 tournament appearances at Nevada with one sweet 16.

People keep mentioning Texas needing a head coach with energy for the fans and he would absolutely do that. Also, he was an elite recruiter and is familiar with the area. Texas had to roll with an unproven guy and it failed. He’s an elite recruiter with a good scheme, proven track record and a guy who would energize Texas BB.

Musselman lost a bit of luster with the craptastic season Arky had last year, calling into question his ability to integrate players from the portal.  He seemed to do fine with it in 2022-23, but last year was a disaster.

He spent part of his youth in San Diego, went to college in San Diego, and spent most of his adult life in California/Nevada/Arizona, and he seemed to be always looking to get back to the west coast.  He's not really happy with the travel demands at USC, but he knew they would be there when he took the job.

So I don't know if he is very interested in leaving USC, but give him another year of wondering if the entire state is going up in flames, then he might.

We had a coach with energy. Shaka jumped all over the place.

By which standard is Musselman "familiar with the area?"  He was an SEC coach for a few years, true.  He got one great recruit from Texas (Anthony Black), but he never landed any other HS recruits from Texas, so I don't quite agree with the selling point of him being Texas-savvy.

Last year was definitely rough but it seems like coaches have those years every once in a while (Scott Drew this year). I was trying to think of relatively recent success guys who might be able to be had from a salary standpoint.

I’m guessing guys like Oats, Pearl, Hurley, Few and Self are unlikely based on salary/buyout. ITT Ivey and Snyder have been discussed. I’m sure I’m leaving out a few but could anyone below be had?

TJ Otzelberger, Eric Musselman, Tommy Lloyd, Mick Cronin, Dana Altman, Will Wade, Chris Jans, Greg McDermott, Brian Dutcher, Greg Guard

If you are really looking at "from a salary viewpoint," then Lloyd is the first to take off the list.  Altman is probably second since he's in Nike backyard.  I suspect we can afford any of the remaining coaches if CDC is willing to pay the money, but each has his sticking points.

Dutcher is 65.  McDermott is 60.  I still think (or maybe I'm being too wishful) that CDC will look for a potential generational hire.  Then again, Musselman is also 60.

Jans most definitely does not excite me.  Gard won't excite anyone who didn't really care for Bo Ryan ball.  I found a lot of beauty in it, but a lot of people didn't.

Wade is affordable, but not at all desired by our administration according to Gerry.

Cronin seems to have a screw loose.

Otzelberger is nearly deified in Ames, but his buyout is easily manageable.

But I'm an outlier who thinks we should go for an up and coming coach rather than an established one.  Otzelberger and Wade are the only guys on your list who really pique my interest.

Yeah, Texas-savvy isn’t what I was going for but I’m sure he’s still relatively familiar with the area after 5 years (having been in on the recruitments of Black, Holland and Morris). He had a couple of top 5 classes. He’d be more familiar with regional recruiting than a guy like Otzelberger or McCollum imo.

Unsure what the record is since this date but was a fun tweet

It’s been a tough go since. Granted, he’s only in year one at USC. However, that moment in the tweet was ONLY two years ago. Heck, we were on our way to the elite 8 that same year.

The Quin Snyder discussion got me thinking about Musselman. Not saying he can’t coach but it’s been 20 years since Snyder was at a collegiate program. Whereas, Musselman had things going two years ago and had been consistent in just about every year before. Coaches have down years. Even Beard’s teams took a step back after his title run in 19.

I’m with you on TJ and Wade. I’m surprised Miller was going to be the guy in 23 when he had similar baggage to Wade. Maybe because Miller wasn’t sanctioned and Wade was?

I think it more of an attitude thing with Wade.  He seems to delight in flouting authority.  I don't think that will fly with the university administration.

But I'm not a fly on the wall in CDC's office.
