Nothing is warming me up to that. If he wasn’t a former Texas player, he wouldn’t be mentioned at all.

This! Just because he’s our guy doesn’t mean he’s THE guy. He may be a great coach but damn it seems like a risk for a current program spiraling out of control. See last years OU football coaching staff as an example. Venables, Littrell, JJF and Murray. How’d that work out for them?

Give me someone proven. Texas fans don’t need an NBA style to show up to Moody. Texas fans rally behind winners. Look at our WBB games.

The point of these NBA hires is that alums are coming back. BYU, Utah, Florida State.

Who is on your "proven" list? That's who matters in the comparison.

I’d take TJ Otz all day long. Took over for a team who went 0-18 in conference and immediately had ISU in the tourney. He’ll have them in it 4 years in a row now with two sweet 16’s.

It’s an unpopular pick on this board but I’d be fired up for Musselman. Yes he had a shitty last year at Arky but had two elite 8’s and one sweet 16 the rest of the time.

Will Wade

The closet “unproven” coach I’d be fired up for is McCollum. I only say unproven because it’s one year in D1 basketball. But he’s done a hell of a job in year one at Drake and has obviously won a bunch at the D2 level.

I'm cool with your list but now it's a matter of whether any of them would be interested, compared to Royal. Wade apparently would but there's a question if Texas would be interested in him.

There's a real chance that Ivey would be the last man standing among that group.

Yeah it’ll all depend on what Texas is willing to pay. Bobby said on Coffee and Football that if the “right guy” was there that the money would be there. I’m not sure what that number is. I would definitely think $5mil but the “right guy” might not move unless it’s closer to $7 or $8 mil. Otz and Muss both make around $4mil.

Ben McCollum, however, is currently making $275k.

I think McCollum is much more likely to take a job in the midwest.

McCollum would be taking a massive leap to the SEC. We are in win now mode. He brought a lot of his D2 guys with him and maxes out their minutes. He’s proven he can win at each stop. Is it worth taking a risk after taking a risk(Terry)? Does he know how to pick the right guys in the portal and maximize their potential? No because he hasn’t had to do it at the SEC level. So it’s our hope that he can. I want the guy that has shown he can do it. That’s where we get into just how much money Texas will spend.

If the right guy is Brad Stevens or Nate Oats or Bruce Pearl, well, that'll be money not spent. If no one else is right, it could be anyone.

That would be hard to do considering pretty much every top coach has already been mentioned.

Gene Hackman and Flip Wilson are gone, but Gabe Kaplan is still around.

Exactly. Only reason his name gets brought up so much is because TJs relationship with him and the program. TJ has wanted Ivey at Texas for years.

McCollum is a sure thing is compared to the risk of Terry.

Yeah they have a relationship because they were on the final four team. Iveys name comes up because he played at the school, played ten years in the NBA and has been a successful assistant coach. The likelihood that he gets a NBA coaching offer is very real. TJ helps but he has his own resume. And if they are taking TJs recommendations, I am also quite sure Coach Barnes is part of those conversations. And he would also bring up Royal. What he did with the Sudan team is also widely known. Royal has put the work in. He hasn’t on the collegiate level which is the concern.

U T can do anything it sets its mind on... however, I think we need to hire the young up and coming coach from Division 2 or Historic Black College ranks. Someone who can spot and develop talent that others over look. We need someone with vision AND character. In other words... a winner.
