TexasDeathStar Posted April 13 Posted April 13 Got to finally do what I’ve waited 6 years for this morning, take my first born (daughter) turkey hunting for youth season. She’s 6, but I was just curious if anyone else out here has taken their little ones when they’re finally of legal age, and how that experience went. It was a much colder morning that normal here in southern MO this morning, so she struggled a bit. Factored in with her waking up @ 3am this morning with a runny nose, mixed with the excitement we didn’t get back to bed and just stayed up until it was time to head out. Got her a good nap around lunch time, went back out this afternoon and she was fairly quiet/still (we were setup in a TideWe all VIS blind so movement wasn’t much concern bec of the setup) until about the hour 20ish mark of the hunt, and the brakes came off 😂 got fidgety, ate snacks on snacks to help with boredom, tried her best to whisper when she had questions about this that and the other, but she made it 2.5 hrs, so I felt like she was a trooper for the most part! In the end, it wasn’t our day today, so I let her rip that .410 at the armadillo in the food plot before packing up. And we’ll be back @ it again tomorrow on another farm. Those easterns in Southern Mo were oddly quiet at this spot today 8 Quote
Moderators Blake Munroe Posted April 13 Moderators Posted April 13 I’m going next weekend and I am pumped. I wanted to go today but it just wasn’t in the cards. I’m taking both my older sons with me (16 and 12) for the first time. My 12 year old is pretty excited about going. The fact your six year old made it that far is impressive! I can’t imagine taking my youngest (also 6) and him making it that long lol. I think I’m going to let my 12 year old use a 410 as well. He’s on the smaller side, but we might try the 20 ga. 4 Quote

It would be pretty cool to get one though my step son shot his first deer last season when I took him. Great memories. Thanks for posting 3 Quote

Welp, she cashed in today! Got to a new setup this morning very early bec of where they roost on a ridge. Sat in a pop up down along a creek bank. She slept and missed all the gobbling for the first 30 mins or so. Had 2 long beards and a Jake hang up on us down the creek in another field across it that we never got eyes on. She was getting antsy, but we just shutup on them and figured we’d wait awhile to see what happens. And BAM, all a sudden we see them out the corner of our eyes at a dead sprint @ our 2 decoys at about 60 yards. Started scrambling to get her on my knee and get her on the gun, the red dot turned on and get the hammer cocked. My stress didn’t help her AT ALL 😂 as I’m trying to make sure her little BOG tripod can swivel over, make sure she’s looking @ the green dot and when to shoot she gets anxious and starts to meltdown, but my GOSH she dropped the hammer on a good ole double bearded bird this morning, and it’s one of the happiest moments of my life! 11 Quote

And yea her little .410 can rip a very good group of pellets out to prob 45 yards or so. We have a guy locally over here that makes very good shotgun ammo. She shoots the Nitro ammo in the TSS loads 2 Quote
Moderators Blake Munroe Posted April 13 Moderators Posted April 13 That is awesome! Nice bird for sure!! Good things come to those who wait (well sometimes when it comes to hunting lol). And, most importantly, it’s definitely a memory you two will remember forever. Your post inspired me to go buy a few things for next weekend, as I wait for my middle son’s basketball practice to be over. My wife will be thrilled. Gotta try it and make it a successful hunt though! 😂 2 Quote

Think he was about an hour and a half southwest of Ft Worth, and usually tries to get down there this time of year and hunt a buddy’s farm. And returns the favor when he comes up here 1 Quote
Joe D Villasenor Posted April 14 Posted April 14 Thanks for posting this! I took my son (14)out deer hunting for the first time. He dropped a doe in her tracks. Hoping to get in on a Turkey hunt! 2 Quote

I, too, am hunting at a buddy’s farm. 😂 1 Quote

About a 25 minute drive from here probably! Back toward Erath County. I’m southwest of Erath in Comanche county. 1 Quote

.45s Posted April 16 Posted April 16 That bird looks twice her size. By the way, we know you were proud. How was she? 2 Quote
harveycmd Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Taking the dogs to go feral hog hunting with my Ruger Redhawk in .45 Colt (high pressure) in about an hour. They'll be running and rooting like crazy after all the rain yesterday. Line me up some pork for the smoking pit. 1 Quote
harveycmd Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Someone asked me how I use the dogs. I use em to hunt. You gotta know dogs and how to train them. Walker for tracking and calling in the others. Border Collie for circling and holding to move in. American Bulldog for hitting and chomping if the hog is too frisky with the other two. Mr. Ruger does the rest. Quote
harveycmd Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Only took about ten minutes. My Border Collie Gael did the entire job. About five minutes we located. She circled and held. Got up to her and a sow was charging and running back to piglets. Walked up with my head lamp shining. Gael held and the sow charged and backed. Took her through the back hip ranging up through the lung. About 150 lbs. Hanging in the trees and cooling just outside the yard now. Process her this evening. Made me have a crystal clear memory/flashback. Not more than fifty yards away in 1986 when I was fourteen, I shot a gator. My grandfather had four catfish ponds from which he sold channel catfish. Ponds are still there. A couple of gators had come in and were eating his brood fish in what he called his "mother" pond. He set up a couple of seine nets to catch the gators. We'd go check the nets morning, noon and evening. We were checking in a flat bottom, paddling out and saw the gator get caught in one of the seines. I had my dad's S&W model 25 with which I'd been practicing. Model 25 was the same as the Dirty Harry Model 29 but in .45 Colt instead. We got up about ten feet away and the gator was hung up. I held up the S&W and asked my granddad where to shoot. He said, "Shot him in the ass! I don't care." That's what I did. Hauled the gator out and sold it to my grandfather's friend up the road. He gave me the money and a 1933 buffalo head nickel. Don't have the cash, but I still have the nickel. 1 Quote
harveycmd Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago (edited) That night I watched Clint in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly after the late news for about the 200th time with my dad on channel 7. Greatest film ever made. Edited 11 hours ago by harveycmd Quote

They seem to look forward to seeing her . If you’re hunting for food I understand. If you’re hunting just to kill something. That seems a little harsh to me . I took my daughter to the library when she was young. She received a double English degree. Then graduated from law school. She still feeds the wild turkeys. Life is good. Quote
