How Arch Manning’s first 5 starts compare to uncles Peyton, Eli and grandfather Archie

You'll need a sub to The Athletic (NY Times) to read the article but you might find it reassuring that slow starts ran in the family.

All four had 4-1 records as a starter after their first five games.  Arch has thrown for almost as many yards as Peyton and Archie combined (though fewer than Eli).  Arch has as many TD passes as Peyton and Archie combined, though fewer INTs, and he has ran for more TDs than the three older Mannings combined.

Uncle Eli put up sterling numbers his first season as the starter at Ole Miss in 2001 as a redshirt sophomore, but he lost three of his last four games and threw eight interceptions over his final five starts.  [ Eli had the best rookie season by far. ]

Grandpa Archie threw 17 interceptions in his first season as the starting quarterback at Ole Miss in 1968.

So, maybe, slow starts are just the way things go for the Mannings.

I said this in an earlier post but it's awesome that this article is available. If this is the worst we'll see, we're good. Lagway is an immense talent himself, and he threw 5 ints last week. People are ready to give up on him are sadly mistaken, too. These are young quarterbacks in the NIL era... and we're talking maybe as big of a group of talents at that position than there has been in awhile. All of these guys feel the pressures to perform for major fan bases, and with the NIL element involved, things are magnified and think about it, who do you go to for advice on how to navigate it, or even how to perform under such conditions?

 

Chill Horns... Arch will be OK.

Peyton was a true freshman though.  This is the start of Arch's third year.  I am not saying he can't turn it around, just that it isn't comparing apples to apples on Peyton.  I am not sure how long Eli sat before getting his shot.

You're right about Peyton, he was the only one to start as a freshman (frosh were not eligible when Archie played).

Eli sat for two years and started in his redshirt soph season, just like Arch.  And Eli had the best start by far - from the article:

"Eli lost his second career start at Auburn, 27-21, but he threw for 265 yards and rallied the Rebels from a 27-0 deficit to make it interesting in the fourth quarter.

Manning responded by winning his next three starts, against Kentucky, Arkansas State and Alabama.

Eli’s totals through his first five starts were the best among all four Mannings: 105-of-168 passing (62 percent) for 1,398 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception.

I'm most impressed by the win against Alabama.

I think many of us would be OK if Arch ends up with similar season numbers - 259-of-408 passing (63.5 percent) for 2,948 yards, 31 touchdowns and nine interceptions - but given all the preseason Heisman hype a lot of people would still feel let down.  And of course a lot will depend on our final record and how well Arch plays in the biggest games. 

11-1 or 10-2 and I'd be happy.  9-3 and sneak into the playoff?  Eh, disappointing but not a disaster.  8-4 or worse - no one here will be satisfied.
