Regarding OU spying: As I recall Royal accused Switzer of spying on his practices and offered Switzer his yearly salary if Switzer could pass a lie detector test. There were reports of the coaches seeing a man watching practice from a distance. Switzer refused the lie detector test and called Royal an old man that spent too much time listening to country music. Their feud came to a head in 1976. Gerald Ford was running for president, and somebody convinced him to appear near midfield during pregame alongside Royal and Switzer. The entire stadium booed loudly, and Ford's pregame move backfired largely. The game ended in a 6-6 tie, and it sucked for everyone involved. Any of you old farts with a better memory feel free to add corrections.

I didn’t say anything about confusing Texas but mind games are part of sports. Make ya have to game plan around 2 qb’s instead of one kinda deal.

I was looking forward to facing off against Mateer but thems are the brakes. We can’t control anything except playing out game play by play, game by game. Kicking OU’s ass is glorious whenever there is an opportunity.

My comment here is a bit different... I have watched Texas -OU game since 1968 and have only missed being in the North half of the Cotton Bowl Stadium 3 times in that span. All the misses due to having surgery myself or a family member's medical need.

I've seen several times where the Longhorns Defense had Zero U under control when the starting Okie QB had to leave the field with an injury. And what do you know? The backup QB in crimson and cream trots onto the field and plays lights out, hot as can be. It's really frustrating for the Texas fans because it seems like the Defense relaxes a bit when the starter goes out and the whole complexion of the game changes.

I really hope "What's his name QB" doesn't get all motivated and play a career best game against Texas and I also hope this edition of the Texas Defense doesn't relax with the savior from the Portal sitting this one out.

The real spygate happened in 72 when Fairbanks was still HC. Royal let it burn for a few years before it came to a head before the 76 game. I still remember DKR having dry heaves after that game.

It's indisputable that Royal helped Fairbanks and Switzer on Switzer's request. Switzer ran an outlaw program thereafter. FBI investigations. Grade changing probation. Cocaine dealing QB. Women beating RB. How many felonies do they need to commit?

Very true. I think it contributed to Royal's early retirement.

For some reason while reading this I flashed back to 1977 (hopefully not one of the three you missed lol).  The cleat was on the other foot that year as our # 1 QB (Mark McBath) suffered a season-ending injury on the 7th play of the game, then our # 2 QB (Jon Aune) came in and HE was injured (season-ending) after 9 plays (those Sooners were a tough bunch on defense).  I remember thinking "we are screwed now".

Randy McEachern, who had barely played, came in and played well enough, 4-8 passing for just 57 yards but handing off to Earl Campbell, who scored the only TD, and avoiding getting injured himself.  And we won 13-6 on our way to an undefeated regular season.  (Still too soon to speak about the ensuing Cotton Bowl game)

You never know.

Between the 76 and 77 games I never witnessed more intensity and downright brutal hitting. There would have been dozens of personal foul and targeting calls if played by 2025 rules.

I mean even when they beat us with Gabriel, they had a lot of luck go their way. We also have several chances to win that game and couldn't get it done. Even if it was with Mateer, he wouldn't be able to hero ball his way out of a Texas ass whooping.
