  1. I think it remains Baylor.
  2. I continue to be told that both Brandon Harris, currently the director of recruiting, and John Michael Jones, the assistant director of player personnel, are expected to be elevated. Harris is likely to become the team’s general manager or whatever terminology Steve Sarkisian opts to call it, a role which was expected to be held by Billy Glasscock prior to his move to Ole Miss last week. Harris has been a steady, trusted force in the recruiting department for the Longhorns under Sark. Jones is expected to become the director of player personnel. Jones has been a behind-the-scenes figure for Texas for several years. The team’s successful walk-on program can be partially attributed to his efforts beginning several years ago. ** The Texas coaches are off this week. Many will be out of the office. Some are taking mini vacations, some are going to see family, etc. But as always, recruiting never stops this time of year. ** There was a time when the first Wednesday in February was complete chaos for Texas and every other college football team. Not anymore. It’s almost crazy to consider the Horns will have a completely quiet second signing day. ** The current litigation between the University of Tennessee, the states of Tennessee and Virginia, and the NCAA are focused around illegal recruiting inducements. The NCAA doesn’t want financial inducements to play a role in recruiting. The states of Virginia and Tennessee say that’s a ridiculous rule. What other “job” do you get where money is not a factor in your decision? And that’s the issue. The NCAA is clinging on to the idea that this is not about a job, it’s about education. The problem is, it’s actually about both for many of these young athletes. The NCAA can’t have its cake and eat it, too. I talked to a legal expert about this over the weekend. They say there’s no question the NCAA will lose this fight, too.

  4. Nice way to start the week off, Gerry.
  5. Join Rod, Gerry and myself at 7pm tonight to talk Longhorn sports and recruiting. Hopefully we have a little fun in the process. https://youtube.com/live/XwHh6t5yyNM

  7. Blake, those make me dizzy. 😉
  8. Lot of truth in this. Sitting is not necessarily a bad thing, it's a chance to get stronger, smarter, etc. Just ask the Mannings.
  9. Let me put that together and do it in an entirely new post this week.
  10. Is definitely worth a quick read.

  11. This is good news IMO.
  12. Strong username from the OP. Over time, I think it will be LSU. Next year, Georgia.
  13. That is the current narrative. Let’s see what can be done about that over the next few months, starting with spring ball and then going into the portal re-opening.
  14. More on NCAA rules and their ineffectiveness. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39454702/rick-pitino-says-ncaa-enforcement-arm-no-value-anymore
  15. Here’s the deal. That looks good on paper. However, after the first three, I don’t know that any of them are shoe-ins to be drafted. Now there are definitely some “likely” to be drafted guys in there like you mention, but not necessarily certain ones. They all have something still left to prove.
  16. A little Sunday football discussion for you guys. Gerry and CJ get together to discuss the Texas draft class and talk about who goes first and why.

  18. You’re right about other teams. Who else looks good in that regard?
  19. Love it. I will never understand why some coaches shun or minimize a legacy and its players as proud as Texas.
  20. We’ve hit on this subject multiple times, but I find it hard to believe the following: 1. Texas will likely have no fewer than eight players picked in the 2024 NFL Draft. 2. Even with that level of attrition, most national media types are suggesting the Longhorns should have as good or better season in 2024. Those things typically don’t square with one another. Heavy attrition, the kind Texas faces going into this season, means the team - any team - will take a step back. Yet folks don’t see it that way. So why is that the case? It’s about the offense more so than the defense. On offense: - Quinn Ewers returns for a third year starting. - The RB room should be fine. Texas blew out two of its last three opponents without Jonathon Brooks already. - Despite heavy losses at receiver and tight end, the Horns nabbed two starters from Alabama (Isaiah Bond and Amari Niblack), a starter and playmaker from Oregon State (Silas Bolden) and perhaps the country’s best kick returner from Houston (Matthew Golden). - The OL returns its stellar left tackle, only loses one starter, and has multiple younger players pushing to get into the lineup. But the defense… - The Horns must replace the strength of the D up the middle. Not just T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy but also Jaylan Ford. - Yet the Horns should be better in both the secondary and at edge. And potential superstar linebacker Anthony Hill is a year older. I don’t know exactly how I feel yet about Texas being ranked so highly this far away from the start of football season. I want to see more from spring ball before I jump out there with Texas being a top 5 team in 2024. Is it possible they are? Yes, absolutely. But let’s see if they mix together like last year’s squad first. “Culture” was a big word for 2023. In my opinion, it needs to be in 2024 as well.

  22. Love hearing that about Wardell Mack. Can’t wait to see all of these DBs in spring ball, plus McDonald and Roberson.
  23. Well articulated IMO.
  24. I love Gus Johnson. Great thing about what he said, he was right either way!
