I thought the offense was much more a team effort than in previous games. It's still not anything remotely like a Dan Hurley passing attack, but it was definitely a couple of steps up from stuff I'd been seeing.
A few things stood out--
We badly missed having Weaver on the floor. We lost consecutive games to the #1 and #2 teams in the country, while being in a one possession game in the last 90 seconds against each of them. (OK, Auburn game wasn't that close, we only got to one possession with 17 seconds to go.) We were missing our second leading rebounder in those games and got clubbed on the boards. The rebound disparity more than anything determined those losses, unless you want to think Auburn just coasted and we never would have made a game of it otherwise. We gave up 17 offensive rebounds to Tennessee while grabbing only 13 defensive rebounds. Shedrick was a monster on the offensive glass last night, a big reason we were in it all game, but you can't expect to win many games when you get less than half of the rebounds on your defensive end.
We don't have anyone who could stay in front of Ziegler, not that staying in front of Ziegler is an easy thing to do. Secondary defenders did a good job of cutting him off and forcing the pass, but Tennessee managed to convert a lot of chances down the stretch by Ziegler driving, drawing defenders, taking advantage of the repositioning by getting rebounding position, kicking out, and getting the rebound after the perimeter shooter missed. Those are the sorts of plays in which Weaver often takes advantage of the movement and chaos and goes soaring above everyone to grab the board. See previous paragraph.
Kent has been awful since returning from injury. Six points on 1/12 from the field and 3/5 from the line with just 4 rebounds in 51 minutes in conference play. Onyema has 5 rebounds in 18 minutes in conference, but he also picked up 9 fouls. Between the two of them, they managed one steal and no blocks.
I can't imagine how Vinson and Codie could produce less than what Kent and Onyema have of late.
