  1. Jim Schlossnagle and the Longhorns are one win away from Omaha after last night’s 11-3 win over Oregon. Ruger Riojas is expected to get the ball for Texas, while the Ducks will counter with Will Sanford. An Oregon win will force a third and final game of the Austin Super Regional on Monday. *** Tonight's lineup, with Riojas and Sanford locked in as the pitching battle:
  2. I’m just relaying what folks in the building at the time told me on Brooks and Murphy specifically.
  3. Not necessarily. With Brooks specifically, the staff didn’t know about him until the recruiting department brought his name to the table. Giles didn’t recruit interior defensive linemen. Mark Hagen was the defensive tackles coach Herman’s last year.
  4. Correct assessment on all accounts. Specifically, Burns missed with a cutter on the 3-2 pitch to Smith. They felt Smith was in swing mode and the cutter didn’t bite enough to convince him to take a hack. Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but Burns seems better when coming in for a clean inning or with less traffic on the bases.
  5. Update on Bino Watters and the first portal weekend: https://ontexasfootball.com/forums/topic/12671-sunday-baseball-portal-update/
  6. Rod Wright would’ve had a longer career after Texas it wasn’t for a bad shoulder. Malcom Brown was a freak athlete at his size. IIRC, @Gerry Hamilton watched Brown beat everybody in a mile run on the first day Brenham started practice Brown’s senior year. The best part about Brown’s recruitment was that A&M, who thought they had him, actually finished third. Brown strongly considered Oklahoma, something that didn’t go public until he put pen to paper. Byron Murphy was another great evaluation by Tom Herman’s recruiting staff. Between Murphy, Jonathon Brooks, Gunnar Helm, Hayden Conner and Barryn Sorrell, that staff identified some future NFL players who weren’t no-brainer takes as recruits.
  7. As Kasey Studdard called it on our Longhorn Blitz 2005 retrospective: “Rod Wright: All Torso!”
  8. That's it for Schloss and the Longhorns. We'll see y'all tomorrow night!
  9. "If they can get on base and flip the lineup to Tinney and Robbins and Pack, that's when we have a chance to score a lot of runs," Schloss said of the bottom of the lineup. Larson, Borba and Pendergrass went 1-for-7, but they scored three runs and combined to draw four walks.
  10. "I always want to give the umpire the benefit of the doubt," Schloss said of letting players demand a review of a call. "But if you're right, let me know."
  11. "Hope to see them tomorrow," Schloss said of the crowd. "Hope they stay the whole game."
  12. Schloss felt Volantis was pitching well enough through the fifth to send him out for the sixth. On Burns, Schloss said it's the second walk that hurt the most. They got Smith where they wanted on the first walk, but Burns didn't locate the cutter well enough to get Smith to swing.
  13. Schloss: "Pitching, defense and timely hitting. Tonight, we got the timely hitting."
  14. Schloss: "We got out-hit tonight, but our situational hitting, our situational baseball was good."
  15. Schloss said Texas has some banged-up guys, so they need to cover some innings.
  16. Schloss said Tulo continues to prove to guys with his work that you can get better throughout a season.
  17. Casey Borba has been working on going the other way. "He's been working on a simpler move — I'll call it that — with Tulo," Schloss said.
  18. Ethan Mendoza "has been in a good place for a while," Schloss said. To Schloss' credit, he's said for a while that he's liked the way Mendoza has been trending.
  19. Schloss on A-Rod: "He doesn't need to take 1,000 swings to be ready. He can wake up and be ready to hit."
  20. A-Rod said the struggles with his hand have forced him to mature. He's had to cut down on the amount of time he's in the cage and he's changed some things mechanically that have helped him.
