CHorn427 Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago You have guys that are fighting until the very end of the season and hoping they can reach the national title, and probably devastated when they don’t make it (especially seniors) And then you find out you’ve been invited to: - The Pop Tart Bowl - The Cheez it Citrus Bowl - The Snoop Dog Bowl -The ReliaQuest Bowl It’s pretty embarrassing. And you have people all over social media making fun of you for it. You’re very unlikely to get credit for a win in the game. It is a far cry from the Rose Bowl, etc. Things that mattered. I’m happy Notre Dame looks like crap from opting out, but I think all of these teams deserve a little empathy for having to hold their heads up and face the noise in these self deprecating bowls 3 Quote

NotGerryHamilton Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago The names are stupid now but the goal for the team remains. Those extra practices mean something to younger players. ND is just acting like cry babies. 4 Quote
drag worm Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago (edited) I’ll take ten extra practices and a game in December against another top five all time wins program. The offseason is long. Edited 2 hours ago by drag worm 6 Quote
Oldest Horn Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago I think every team has a right to determine whether going to a bowl is the right thing to do. ND looks to have a lot of starters who’ll be opting out anyway. Can’t blame them for not wanting to throw out a whole bunch of greenhorns into a bowl game. Personally I think Texas should take a hybrid approach. Take advantage of the 15 practices. No doubt several departing starters will opt out. Protect folks like Arch, CJ and Wisner (if he stays) and limit their game reps. Play the hell out of the kids starting in the 2nd quarter. Quote

Those teams who do not participate are missing an extra opportunity similar to missing spring practices and a real game as opposed to an intrasquad scrimmage that follows spring training (or doesn't). Important for next year. 1 Quote

I wouldn’t be opposed to that either, but the same people saying these bowls don’t matter and we should opt out would be out in full force saying Sark and the rest of the staff should be fired for poor performance. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. Quote

I think they are cry babies though, and cutting off their nose to spite their face. Those greenhorns are exactly why they need 15 days of extra practice. You essentially get another spring. And since we don’t use ours properly anymore (OTAs, that IMO make us soft) I’m glad we have sucked it up, and decided to use these practices. Edited 1 hour ago by Austalgia Quote

Sanka Decaf Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Now that the die is cast, there is a lot of value for a team to play an extra competitive game. Experience for players AND coaches. Culture. Revenue. Another chance for fans to see their team play. It’s a business and there is value for next year. I want to see arch a bit more and to see more of Lacey. I want to see more Simon. I want the seniors to pass on a culture moment to the younger players. I want the coaches to experiment. 1 Quote
Moderators Jeff Howe Posted 1 hour ago Moderators Posted 1 hour ago The bowls will remain until sponsorship money stops flowing. One of the reasons why it has been good for conferences to go to a pool system for bowl payouts is because schools tend to lose money on bowl games. 3 Quote

Expand the playoffs and make a few more bowl games playoff spots for the early rounds. Quote

I don’t think losing to Wash in 2022 hurt us in the least. We came back rather nicely the following year. Quote
