Mods still haven’t said anything on X or in any of the feeds so there is still hope it’s a false report.

Bobby made a comment on it

I mentioned it in the snap count thread for the bowl game, but Barnes didn’t look great against Michigan outside of a few snaps. I just went back and checked, JJR, moved over to LB for the bowl game actually out snapped him.

Athletic guy, needs more time in the oven before seeing the field.

College football is broken. This is not a Texas problem. They (agents, players, and the courts) have ruined the game. If I coached at any of the big schools where winning is a requirement, I would either retire or head off to the NFL where at least there are rules governing the sport.

What we have now is total and utter chaos with very little loyalty. It is over.

Another cite reporting that we  asked him to take a pay cut

Narratives like this are the issue.

It’s not a pay cut. It’s a negotiation year to year about what someone is worth.

He had four tackles in 2025.

He is a good player with the potential to eventually be a starter.

Lots of players take less after their freshman season.

It’s a renegotiation year to year.

I mean what is going on at this point? Can't retain quality depth, can't close the deal on portal guys, pivoting to Plans C & D. First time im legit questioning this staff's ability. I say all that with the mindset that they can still turn it around......not a lot of time to do so though.

Bobby, with Barnes out do you expect Texas to take 3 linebackers now and do you have any news on the Cal LB

I look forward to a day when the portal has some sensible guardrails.

yeah I always wondered about the crazy numbers for some of the recruits. Like why pay the 1.5M for a #1 at a position who wont see the field that year... It should be like okay you get 100k year one, then 1M once you start type of thing.. so yeah if its just paying them a ton to get them in the door, that sets the floor of their pay. so if they dont immediately start or are ready to be a top guy year two, its not a good deal for the school to pay so much to have someone sit.

Somethings gotta change, this new world is kinda terrible

Staff must be really confident we can upgrade all these positions with the portal if they’re letting all these players walk…extremely concerning when they have no control over who enters from other teams.

There’s plenty of time. The timeline to enter the portal closes on Jan. 16.

As I mentioned in my article this morning, I suspect Texas will be adding depth pieces all the way into the spring.

Yep.

We’ll see if they’re right.

I can’t imagine that anyone outside of Tech is happy with the current situation. This portal window will surely fire up most of the P4 schools to demand change

Looks like he probably will have guys ahead of him in 2026, and some behind him that will come fast. Maybe he is worried he will peak, at Texas, as a 2nd team type. Fairly likely scenario.
