I don't want to hear bout college football being great now. It sucks! Bunch of 23-24 year olds playing against teenagers. It's pure BS. This crap would be like watching Kobe playing against Duke in 2002. Guy had been the best player in the world since 2000. None of these crap CFP players are that good, but it doesn't change the principle. I'd rather watch women's basketball than a bunch of mid 20s guys play for a CFP national championship.

I have a suspicion that the portal is filled with guys that either got cut or are out of eligibility anyways and wouldn’t be on rosters even in a pre-portal world. 
 

Surely there are some that are currently overpricing themselves but they still have an opportunity to lower their demands and make a roster. Everyone who is viable will be on a roster. Where is the crisis? 

This is a pretty solid thought.  I suspect the D2 and D3 guys were hoping for an upgrade.

You likely do have more D1 guys hoping to hang on for an extra year.  That’s more refusing to let go than crisis.

You have seniors exiting and freshmen entering so it’s not like the total of spots are shrinking, as you mentioned.

You cant enter the portal without eligibility.  These players are being told they can get more in the portal, go out trying to get more and the places they want to go are being filled with players that arent demanding ad much ir are deemed higher value targets.

D2 players are probably being replaced with d1 players willing to step down and d3 players they sre willing to role the dice on.
