Nobody's up in the Texas bullpen right now.

I thought they might pull him after 90 pitches if he has to go on short rest next week in the opener

Sure, 84 ‘low‑stress’ pitches is fine - I’m not saying the guy is out there suffering. I just didn’t expect them to let him chew through that many in a 13–0 game. At some point it’s less about saving the bullpen and more about ‘why are we giving the entire regional a full scouting report on him tonight.’ But hey, if he’s truly shelved until Monday, I guess they’re comfortable letting him rack up the cardio.

Tarleton will have seen Volantis and UCSB has a season's worth of information on him, so the scouting component isn't a big deal.

Personally, I think this is more about Schloss and Weiner hedging against Ruger's shoulder not being up to snuff tomorrow and needing to use more bullpen arms if Riojas can't go deep.

After 6.1 innings and 91 pitches, Volantis exits with a runner on first and one out.

Hudson Hamilton is the first man out of the bullpen tonight for the Longhorns.

Hamilton allows a single and a double. The shutout is over. It's a 15-2 lead for the Longhorns.

One of those runs was charged to Volantis, who now has a 1.94 ERA on the season.

Ideally for me tomorrow, I’d like to see the combo of Ruger, Burns, Leffew, Crossland, and Cozart close it out.

Whatever it takes to shut the door tomorrow night.

Sure, Tarleton’s seen him and UCSB has a whole season of film - that’s not really the point. There’s a difference between ‘they’ve scouted him’ and ‘we just let them watch him throw 84 pitches in real time the night before they might face him.’ Coaches don’t usually volunteer that kind of live look in a 13–0 game unless they have to.

And yeah, I get the Ruger shoulder hedge and the Riojas insurance angle - that actually makes more sense than the scouting argument. But that’s kind of my point: if they’re worried about tomorrow’s arms, it means they’re stretching Volantis because they don’t trust the rest of the plan, not because this is some ideal scenario. It’s still a weird amount of work for a blowout. Not trying to argue with you Jeff, just feel this is kind of weird.

And back in the Sandy Koufax days, yeah, he’d have thrown 180 pitches and then asked for the ball tomorrow - but that was before sports science, analytics, and common sense existed 😃

Borba really needs some work on keeping his head in and trying to go with the ball when on the outside. He also chases too many out of the strike zone and it seems like he is looking at the fence half the time.
