The countdown rolls on with one of the thinner jersey numbers in Texas history, but there are still a pair of Longhorns worthy of recognition.

1. Ty Allert | Linebacker (1982–85)

Allert finished his career with 287 tackles and 27 sacks, while earning All-Southwest Conference honors and Texas team MVP honors as a senior in 1985. He helped lead the Longhorns to the 1983 Southwest Conference championship, served as a team captain, and was selected in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.

2. Malcolm Minnick | Defensive End (1971–73)

A three-year letterman, Minnick earned first-team All-Southwest Conference honors in 1973, all while helping the Longhorns capture three consecutive SWC championships from 1971–73. He was a reliable force on a defense that helped keep Texas among the nation’s elite.

Ty Allert, the only player from Northbrook HS in Houston to make it to the NFL.

Both were very good ball players. Malcolm was a bit undersized for DE but tough as nails.

Ty Allert is the one I remember; hard hitter.

• Doug Shankle (1978-1981). Holds the record for career solo tackles at UT (325).  Coincidentally, that statistic was not part of the records until his freshman year in 1978.

Ty was a really good player on some marginal teams. Shankle stepped in as a true freshman when Lance Taylor went down and never let go of the position.

I don’t recall that name but I remember Ricky Caesar who graduated in 1990 was offered a full ride at Miami but he couldn’t pass his classes.

I just looked him up. He must have been a few years after I graduated.   Sounds like he is a top guy taking a lot of challenging coaching jobs.
