Advice on Texas game-day and Hill country

A younger friend of mine is planning a trip to Austin on a game day and then a couple days in Hill country around Fredericksburg. He wants to travel to Austin on a Thursday, and experience the game day environment and watch the game somewhere nearby with Longhorn fans in a nearby club or restaurant, maybe the Ohio State weekend. He doesn’t want to shell out what it takes for a ticket.
  For those in the know, any suggestions appreciated that I can pass on to him? He and his wife are in their 30’s, live out of state. He is a huge Texas fan.  I think they plan 3 days in Austin then maybe a drive out to the hill country maybe to the Fredericksburg area for a couple days.

Posse East gets you close enough to DKR to hear it and smell the tailgates if the wind is blowing right.

He can wander around the tailgates and pretty sure catch the game there and meet some randos.  If he can get inyt shultz garden, he should and watch the game there.

OTF has a tailgate that is a good time Scholz, Posse East, or Crown and Anchor are good cheap spots to hang and watch the game. If they’re alumni you can always go watch the game there too. Hill country Fredericksburg is great for wineries and food. Johnson City too. We live in Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay is a great spot for golf my wife owns a paddle board fitness class that is GREAT for the ladies and specially designed for them. Boardandbodylbj.com. Not sure if they still do it, but a while back I watched a game on the LBJ lawn right outside DKR. They have a huge screen with tons of fans watching and you can hear the crowd noise right behind you. I really enjoyed it

Not always, that’s where Longhorn city limits is. Since game day will be there they may have something like that.

Good to know. The game I was referring to was 2019 LSU so I’m sure a lot has changed since then lol

If he’s coming in for a big weekend like Ohio State, he’ll have no problem getting the full DKR experience without paying DKR prices. Posse East is basically the unofficial “no‑ticket section” - packed, loud, and close enough to feel the crowd shake the place. Scholz is the more traditional option with a huge beer garden and a ton of alumni. Crown & Anchor is the cheaper, more laid‑back campus bar if they want something less shoulder‑to‑shoulder.

If Longhorn City Limits sets up the big screen on the LBJ lawn, that’s honestly one of the best ways to watch a game. You’re outside, surrounded by fans, and the stadium noise is right behind you.

Tailgate‑hopping around DKR is also a must. Plenty of TVs, plenty of friendly Horn fans, and he’ll meet more random Longhorns in one afternoon than he has in his entire life out of state.

Fredericksburg afterward is a great cool‑down - Becker, Grape Creek, Signor, all solid wineries. Johnson City is quieter but has great tasting rooms. Marble Falls/Horseshoe Bay if they want lake time or golf.

Easy trip, great mix of chaos and chill. Hook ’em.

Haha, for the better Bevo blvd is insane but they definitely had game day in Austin for that one so they may have something similar again on LBJ!

Chalmers on the east side is an insane game watching spot. It is gigantic with a bunch of different large projection screens.

Garrison Brothers is in Hye on the way to Fredericksburg and is a great place to visit.  William Chris winery is right on 290 in Hye and has some good wines.  Some of the winereies mentioned above are good.  Fredericksburg has a wide variety of restaurants and shops and a lot of the better restaurants are not on Main Street.  The Admiral Nimitz/Pacific Museum is there and is a nice museum.  He was from Fredericksburg.  The LBJ  State Park and National Historic place are west of Johnson City.

If y'all are winos Ron Yates' winery is outside of Johnson City...he graduated from UT and also owns Spicewood Vineyards.

Crown and Anchor for the game.  While in Austin, get a breakfast taco at Vera Cruz a natural, burger at odd duck (need reservation), sueredero tacos at Suerte, brunch and coffee one morning Proud Mary’s.  Probably some bbq, right? Just pick one of the best.  Gonna wait in line at any of them.  I like Interstellar, free lone star in line, just a little outside on 620.  Fredericksburg, get some German food and ice cream downtown after.  Cool air b&bs in Fredericksburg.  Visit one of the wineries, walk around town in and out of shops, get some samples, buy and eat a peach while there .
