Complete tears of the ACL or PCL usually cause immediate, intense pain and a feeling of instability that makes normal walking very difficult or impossible right away. I was playing basketball with a guy years ago who hurt his knee during a pickup game. He kept shooting around for a bit and the pain amped up later. He found out from the MRI he had torn his ACL.
