2 Days Until Kickoff: Who Was The Best No. 2?

Two days until kickoff and No. 2 has been worn by some great Longhorns on both sides of the ball.

Jerry Gray finished his Texas career with 297 tackles and 16 interceptions. He was a two-time consensus All-American, two-time Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Eric Metcalf totaled 5,705 all-purpose yards, led Texas in all-purpose yards all four years and was the 1987 Southwest Conference Player of the Year. He also earned second-team All-America honors and was a three-time All-SWC selection.

Matthew Golden only played one season at Texas, but he made it count. Golden caught 58 passes for 987 yards and nine touchdowns, helped Texas reach the College Football Playoff semifinals and became a first-round NFL Draft pick.

Kris Boyd recorded 191 tackles, four interceptions and 40 passes defended during his Texas career. He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2018 and helped the Longhorns win the Sugar Bowl.

Fozzy Whittaker rushed for 1,233 yards and 12 touchdowns, but he was at his best as a kickoff returner. He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2011 and returned kickoffs for touchdowns in back-to-back games against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Hollywood Smothers and Derek Williams Jr. are the current Longhorns wearing No. 2.

Jerry is hard to beat but I always thought Alfred Jackson, who was at UT when I was, was pretty darn good, and certainly worth mention.

Eric Metcalf is an underrated player. Played on some bad and mediocre teams yet excelled. In today's offenses, he would be a Heisman candidate. Had a long career in the league. All American in track on top of that.

But... Jerry Gray was a beast!

Picking between all of those names feels a bit like choosing between different game styles on https://tropical-casino.com/ Tropical Casino — some stand out for consistency, others for the big moments. I tend to bounce between a few slots and live games the same way I go back and forth on a list like this before settling on a favorite.

I’d probably go Jerry Gray if we’re talking best overall résumé in burnt orange. Two-time consensus All-American, elite production, major awards, and College Football Hall of Fame is tough to beat.

 

Metcalf is the one who makes me pause, though. He was electric in a way that still jumps off the page, and all-purpose impact matters a ton. Golden’s one year was huge, but for a “best No. 2” discussion, I lean toward the guys who stacked it over multiple seasons.
