Aaliyah Chavez Update (Wed 11:30 AM)

Spoke with some sources regarding Lubbock Monterey’s Aaliyah Chavez and where things stand on National Signing Day.

Don’t be surprised if Chavez, the nation’s No. 1 player for 2025, doesn’t sign today. I’m not saying she won’t for sure, but it very well may not happen and it wouldn’t shock the schools below if that were the case.

Here’s the rundown on what I’m hearing on the schools in the running as of mid-morning.

Texas: Feels great about their chances. Basically just waiting on a decision at this point. They’ve done everything right and have been thought to be the leader for awhile.

Texas Tech: Chavez just wrapped up an OV there and it went well. They’re pushing the whole “hometown hero” scenario to her. The ADIDAS affiliation looms large, however, as Chavez is a Nike kid.

Oklahoma: One of the schools that has been quietly making progress in this recruitment. Some schools on this list wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up being OU.

UCLA: She enjoyed her time out west, but those in the know would be surprised if the Bruins were the pick unless there’s a very large NIL push at the last moment.

LSU: The general consensus is that the Tigers have signed too many players. They seem to be out of it.

I've never understood the reporting that she "is a Nike kid". Not saying it's wrong or I don't believe it or anything at all, just haven't heard that before.

Does it mean that she just literally prefers the Nike brand better to Adidas? I can understand that, but I would be pretty surprised if a high level collegiate athlete was making decisions based on it. It reads more to me like she has some people connected to Nike in her circle that are pushing her that way.

But again, totally just speculating. Weird recruiting quirk that I haven't heard before.

Shoe association is huge in basketball and has been for long time. KD was always going to Nike school.

It's a huge deal in basketball recruiting....yes there are some exceptions but the shoe company FBI investigation out front should have told ya.

Texas and Nike should win out here.

Four Nike schools and hometown Adidas Texas Tech ... should be telling IMO. If she wasn't from Lubbock, Tech wouldn't be in it. Dad has a training facility in Lubbock - will that factor in?

She's a Nike kid

Within Nike ... there is Jordan Brand ... Oklahoma and UCLA wear Jordan Brand. Will that be impactful in NIL in any way?

Three SEC schools: Texas, OU and LSU.

Did she do all this training, traveling and climb to No. 1 overall to not play in the best conference, biggest college stage and for a marquee brand? Only if hometown school could keep her from it.

So, when kids are playing AAU (or spring/summer club ball) at a high level the teams they are playing for are usually affiliated with one brand or another. Being affiliated with that brand has you playing the majority of your games in their exclusive circuit where you only playing against Nike or Adidas or Under Armor teams. Chavez has been the best player on one of the best Nike teams (Cy-Fair) on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) for a number of years now.

With a kid that good, Nike has identified her as one of their future stars and that relationship over the years is one they hope to parlay into a professional one when the time is right. Could she go against the grain and sign with an Adidas school and still sign with Nike afterwards? Sure but Nike would probably prefer that the little girls that buy up all of the Aaliyah Chavez college jerseys have the Nike swoosh in the corner and not the three stripes. Hope that helps explain it some.

Gerry I read somewhere that LSU backed out when she said she wanted $1M in NIL money. Have you heard this? Or think there is any truth to it? I don’t know what the top wbb player in the country would bring but that’s some pretty good coin.

I did hear that too. But don't know if that's entirely accurate.

Caitlin Clark made 3 million while at Iowa with her NIL deals and later signed an 8yr 28 million dollar deal with Nike.
