A few notes on Clemson

Clemson is a 10-3 ACC Championship team coming to Austin December 21. A deeper dive against the top 5 teams they have played tells a different story, however.

Clemson P4 opponents winning % ...
Georgia 11-2
NC State 6-6
Stanford 3-9
FSU 2-10
Virginia 5-7
Wake Forest 4-8
Pittsburgh 7-5
Virginia Tech 6-6
Louisville 8-4
South Carolina 9-3
SMU 11-2
Total = 72-60

Clemson's record vs. the teams with an 8-4 record or better on the schedule...
1-3. Losses to Georgia (34-3), Louisville (33-21), South Carolina (17-14) and beat SMU 34-31.

Averaged 18.0 points per game in those four games.

Clemson has struggled running the ball vs. top 5 opponents played...
Clemson has played 5 teams with a 7-5 or better record, and the Tigers have struggled to run the ball.

Georgia - Phil Mafah 16 carries for 59 yards
Pittsburgh - Mafah 17 carries for 17 yards
Louisville - Mafah 30 for 171 yards and 2 TD's
South Carolina - Mafah 20 for 66 yards
SMU - Mafah 13 for 28 yards
Total = 99 for 342 (3.45 per carry)

Mafah will also enter the game vs. Texas with a shoulder that is less than 100%. He's banged up per a source in the Palmetto State.

Clemson defense vs. the top 5 opponents on the schedule...

Georgia - 447 yards
Pittsburgh - 438 yards
Louisville - 366 yards
South Carolina - 431 yards
SMU - 458 yards
Average = 428 yards per game

We should be able to dominate them physically on both LOS given what Georgia did to them earlier this year.

Clemson's OL should struggle against Texas, agreed.

Their DL on the interior can truly compete IMO.

Yea our interior OL will need to step up in a big way, given how they were manhandled against Georgia. @Gerry Hamilton do you have any intel on how Neto is doing? I’ve been kind of waiting for the staff to give him some sort of chance because I just don’t see Conner doing well against elite teams, especially in the run game. But they won’t change it this late in the season so I’m more so curious about Neto’s progression.

This is going to be a contrast of two different roster building styles. Dabo has been very open about he doesn’t like the portal. I haven’t researched whether he has any portal guys or not but I would bet it is not many.

Sark has embraced everything that is available to him including the portal. You look at our portal guys on this years team, they’re difference makers. We wouldn’t be where we are at right now without the portal guys on our team.

Two different ways of doing things. We’ll see how it goes.

Clemson has zero portal. Tied with the military academies for least.

You know what Saban told Sark. You have to adapt. He said that is why there isn’t dinosaurs anymore………they couldn’t adapt 😂😂

We’ll see how it goes, but I would want to use whatever is available to me.  Like I said, we have gotten ALOT of production out of our portal guys. I suspect Sark keeps bringing in difference makers via the portal.

I took a cursory look at defensive stats yesterday (and some offensive) and the only one where Clemson was ahead of Texas was net turnover margin.  They’ve been good at recovering fumbles (and not turning it over on offense).

That said, other than some real dudes on the DL (Woods, Parker), and some good young WRs (Wesco, Williams, Moore) I don’t see much to worry about.  Klubnik is a chain mover, not a big play guy, and we need to be more aware of his legs than his arm.

This feels a bit like Arkansas (dual threat QB, decent WRs, but a much better DL).

Their interior DL can compete but so could Michigan’s. Their front 7 doesn’t rival Georgia’s. I’m less concerned about Clemson’s defense than I am about our offense’s inconsistent play.

Highly doubt Dabo believes in dinosaurs but a story for a different day…

Do they have depth at O-line, though? I feel like this can look a lot like atm. Lean on them and wear them down.

Maybe I’m wearing burnt orange glasses, but I agree with my friend a few posts earlier…I think Texas cleans up its problems, uses this as a tune up for the stretch run, and boat races Clemson.
