If You Win the Toss...

@Bobby Burton, @Gerry Hamilton and I had the conversation earlier today on Coffee & Football about what you would do if you were Steve Sarkisian and you won the coin toss.

I believed in allowing the defense to take the field first and seeing if Ohio State could go the length of the field to begin the game.

Gerry and Bobby sided with taking the ball and putting the offense on the field to start the contest, citing Ohio State's scorching hot starts to their Playoff games.

What would you do given the decision?

I'm normally a defer guy, but with us being the underdogs we are, feel like we need to get the ball first and try to jump ahead first thing

Totally agree with this. I trust the defense and normally would defer, but you can’t let them get up 7-0. I think that’s a recipe for disaster. Let Sark put together a badass script and get up on them early. We also have completely squandered every opportunity to start with the ball in the second half, so I’m not sure it’s that big of an advantage.

I feel like majority of the time we've elected to receive to open a game we've gone 3 and out. Maybe I just remember the 3 and outs more because it's infuriating to receiver and just go 3 and out.

Always defer, we are a defensive team. Let them set the tone or if they give up a score it perhaps changes the offenses mentality of what they need to do.

Texas has the No. 1 scoring defense in the country for 1st quarters – allowing just 5.2 points per opening quarter.

Meanwhile, Ohio State has taken leads of 21–0 and 14–0 in their two playoff games after the first quarter.

Whoever comes out on top in that frame will have the upper hand.

How is tOSU's punting game?

Ohio State's punting Joe McGuire averages 41.8 yards per punt this season, good for 91st in the country.

McGuire has a net average of 39.2 which ranks 90th.

In comparison, Michael Kern's 37.1 net average ranks 130th.

Smells to me like we defer then - if we can hold in the first 20-30 yards, we get pretty okay field position.

Just an observation Quinn called tails twice for the asu game but weren’t we the home team?  Or did we become the visiting team in the eyes of the coin toss wearing the visiting colors?  Will be the same at the cotton bowl?

We were lower seed so we were visiting team.

I agree, plus we limit the number of our own possessions that we waste in the Cursed Third Quarter!

tOSU has been incredible at starting games recently. But I like the Texas defense and their 1st half approaches as of late.

Since the UGa game in mid October the defense has probably averaged giving up 4 points in the first half of games.  Only Vandy and ASU have made double digits (10 each).  You trust that defense no matter whom they line up against.

I would defer. I don't think will Howard has played a defense as good as Texas including Michigan. Put the pressure on the lesser quarterback on the favored team. Stick with your bread and butter to come out fierce defensively. Even if they score, Quinn has answered the bell better than getting out ahead and finishing a game. Take the momentum and then finish them in the second half opening possession where will has to rely on his pass game to catch back up down multiple scores.

With respect to you…..I do not want our offense having to try to catch up with a potential TD drive by the other team in the 2nd half.
