JD Pickell on OU

Klatt is a big fan of John Mateer as well.   Watched him play up close and believes OU will be a completely different team as a result.   Gittyup, our schedule appears to be quite a bit tougher this season if OSU, OU, Florida and Georgia all live up to pre-season hype.   A&M is hard to read which way they’re moving.

The good news is that Texas should be better this season as well overall…..deeper RB and WR rooms, more athletic (less experienced) OL and Heisman favorite Arch at QB.  We should have the best front 7 on defense in college football.   Secondary is a question mark to be answered but confident given all the young talent.

10-2 is the floor.  Shouldn’t do worse than 2-2 in those four matchups imo

OU will have a better offense in 2025, it quite simply can’t be worse than what we watched a year ago.

Eh, I don't get all the hype. New system, new players and new playcaller, etc. I'm sure they'll be improved offensively, but didn't they lose a crap ton defensively? I can't see them being drastically better.

I probably should have included A&M in that list for our ‘Big 5’ games this season.   All 5 will be real tests 3 legit road games, 1 neutral site and 1 at home.    3-2 in those games seems most likely. If we manage 11-1 or 12-0, look out!!   ChatGPt determined Longhorn regular season record probability as follows:

12-0 -  5%
11-1 -  20%
10-2 - 40%

Season doesn’t go as hoped / expected.

9-3 -  25%

8-4 - 10%

This defense is FAR better prepared for dual threat QBs like Mateer than at any time in recent memory.  Texas will be able to spy him and still maintain a pass rush and coverage discipline.  The disparity in athleticism this year favors Texas in a big way (especially in the trenches).

I actually think that OU is going to get a beat down this year from Texas.  We shall see.

These guys are in the business of selling clicks.  They have something good to say about every team to cater to every fan base and selling hope in the preseason.  
 

You will see them reuse materials in different combinations throughout the week.   Mateer is not going to magically make their OL better and I believe they will have a very hard time with our rush this year.   Anyway, no matter what he says, nothing will change that OU sucks

But it’s not as simple as that. Mateer came with the new OC from WSU so there won’t be a learning curve for the most important position in football. It still won’t look like a guy who has been there as the OC for 4 years, but it won’t be the same as a completely new system. They are probably starting on 1st base instead of being in the batter’s box.

I’d be cool with a 63-14, 65-13, 45-12, 55-17, 63-21, 49-0, 34-3 esque beatdown.  Need one more win like that from the Texas side to even the score there this century in that regard.  I hope both teams come into that game in undefeated and Sark just runs it up on BV one last time before he’s gone.

I sooo hope they are stupid enough to trout out a true freshman starter at left tackle against our pass rush. If they do they better hope michael fasusi is the truth because he’s will have his hands full all day in the cotton bowl.

Our ends, backers, and safeties will be elite if healthy.
 

Our DTs will be serviceable to above average. Corners could hit but we’ll have to see.

Their roster is full of jags. Their ceiling is likely 8 wins. But probably 7-5.

I'm on the fence of do I want OU going into the RRR undefeated, or do I want them to suffer defeats to Michigan and Auburn (Jackson Arnold) at home. Typing that out, I want the latter to happen. I think the thing that is being overlooked with them are their receiving options. As good as Burks is supposed to be he has not had a eye popping stat season in college, and he had issues dealing with concussions to end the season last year. Javonnie Gibson was looking like another Andrew Armstrong (Arkansas receiver that was drafted), but how will he be coming back from a broken leg. Also BV as a DC creates chaos plays for his defense, but he also creates explosive plays for the offense. It's in the realm of possibility that Mateer has a Manziel like season and propels OU to a playoff spot and gets first round draft pick love. This is the season of hope, and I'm sure most football programs see bright skies in the 2025 season.

Pickell hypes everyone up - that’s his job. OU will be decent, but it’s going to be a tough game because it’s a rivalry. 
 

I don’t buy that they’re going to be a “significantly better team,” just a better offense. Defense may not be near as good.

So, the teams he'll be playing are much tougher than anything WSU played. Not only that, his OL doesn't look all that impressive and he's having to build a new rapport with his receivers. Not saying they can't be good, I just don't see where all the excitement is coming from for them. Even defensively, they lost a lot of key pieces.

Don't look down on the DT room, I think they can get to a really good place. Some good additions over the off-season to help fill in a room that was bare outside of the guys already there, in part because of Davis. I've been impressed with what Baker has done with the room in just 1 recruiting cycle.

Well, I finally started paying attention to all the preseason hype for Zero U.... there's gonna be some really disappointed Okies if their hyped up team doesn't live up to all this talk from pundits and analysts.

My question is how often does a dual threat QB play a full season in the SEC without injury?!
