Good points.

Ohio State wasn’t buying into the play-action fake IMO. That’s why there was rarely anyone open deep.

They were willing to give up 5 yards runs and keep their safeties deep.

Wingo is our only player that would scare a DC. Double him and who else do we have that is explosive?

Last year we had Golden, Wingo, Bond (until his injury) and Blue.

We had Worthy and Bijan year one. Worthy, Bijan and Blue year two. Worthy, Mitchell and Blue year 3.

I think sark was cocky in the off season and decided not to pay the money for top WR talent in the portal and now it will come back on him. The one WR you got hasn’t played since the start of fall camp apparently.

Arch will improve as he gains more experience. That is a given. To what level … we shall see.

Sark has been coaching for 25 years. Does he need 30? Or 40 years of experience to get more creative in the red zone? Anyone that watches college football sees creativity an the RZ from coast to coast

Sark’s redzone play calling is a head scratcher sometimes. Not just yesterday, but if you even go back to the last couple of years and in the playoffs games when he needs to step up and make a high percentage play. Alot of times he calls something and it is such a low percentage call. I mean everything would have to go perfect for it to work and it doesn’t happen…..as we have seen. You can flog me if you want, but I am not as high in Sark as a play caller as alot of people are. He good but to me he is not an elite play caller. Doing both jobs may not let him prepare as much as you have to to call plays. I don’t know. Arch didn’t play as good as we thought he would but Sark has got to figure out a dozen or so plays that are high percentage that he can run in a very hostile environment to settle him down and start to take the crowd out of the game. I don’t think anything will change and if it doesn’t we won’t have a very good record against the elite teams and we’ll be the second tier of teams behind the elite ones. Just my opinion

Week ones are good for overreactions and out of proportion takes that typically don't age well, so read into this as you wish.

However, when scouring over the numbers and tape again this morning, there was a clear part of the passing game that felt worse than others – play action passes.

The numbers back it up too.

***

Arch on Play Action Pass Attempts

  • 10 drop backs
  • 5-10 passing
  • 26 yards
  • 2.6 yards per attempt
  • 1 INT
  • 2 turnover worthy plays

Arch on Straight Drop Backs

  • 24 drop backs
  • 12-20 passing
  • 144 yards
  • 7.4 yards per attempts
  • 1 TD
  • 0 turnover worthy plays

Perhaps part of the offensive struggles on play action snaps include the average distance of target. On PA snaps, Arch's average distance of target was 11.9, compared to 8.8 on straight drop backs.

***

We will see over the next three weeks how this trend continues, but file this one in the growing "Didn't Expect That" folder from the season opener.

Would love to see Rod or the film guy break this down further. Seems the PA eliminated the very quick open opportunities. Lots of time Arch was back there 3+ seconds and couldn’t find anyone open. Except his check down which he refused to hit until the 4th qtr

Is Collin Simmons ready to be an every down player?  Seemed like they ran at him and he didn’t hold the edge. Yesterday we didn’t get them into enough 3rd and longs where they could release the hounds

Ohio State was going to attack him in the run game

I would have to test him

Good for him to experience that in game

Yes, he’s a great player. But yesterday was an example of why you don’t get on social media acting like you were going to take over the game and sack Julian, 2 total tackles and one solo. Didn’t have an impact at all.

Tom herman averaged

2017: 31.5 PPG

2018: 31.1 PPG

2019: 35.2 PPG

2020: 42.7(!!) PPG

SARKS PPG AT TEXAS:

2021: 35.2 PPG

2022: 34.5 PPG

2023: 35.8 PPG

2024: 33.3 PPG

2025:    7.0 PPG (so far)

If I’m not mistaken, 2020 was the year Herman hired Mike Yurcich to call plays on offense.  Two things:  it was a COVID season, so not sure how many teams were able to properly install their defensive schemes.  69 of their points came from the K-State game the week after Texas missed the Big 12 title game due to losing to ISU.  It is alarming the ppg output is on a downtrend no doubt.  The ypg looks pretty, but if you can’t score points, it doesn’t mean much.

Rewatch the sacks weren't there but he definitely had an impact. The had multiple pressures and forced a couple of Incompletions.

There was plenty of WRs in the portal too, this is gonna be point of criticism all year of our only play maker at WR is Wingo. I thought we would be all in these two years with Arch, we definitely invested into the defense but offensively we lack explosive playmakers.

Also was that Ant Hills worse game as a longhorn? I never heard his name once, also where was Vasek and Spence? I only saw Vasek on special teams.

Relax this is game one going against a veteran secondary.

If this team wants to win a championship they will have to play other really good secondary’s.

A bright note from Arch was the deep ball, as expected.

On passes 20+ yards down the field per PFF:

  • 3-6 passing
  • 90 yards
  • 1 TD
  • 1 INT
  • average distance of target was 30.3 yards

CJ always love you takes but the deep ball doesn’t win championships

The bigger concern is arch and his throwing motion change. If his issue is that he loses his mechanics when nervous, he’s done. That’s a death knell for any qb. That’s the entire thing for me. It simply can’t be his kryptonite. If it truly is, you’d have to move on. It’s the equivalent of a kicker’s yips. The problem is he had decent time more often than not. It was almost he was trying to win the game with each throw. The real issue will be if arch has a permanent mental thing in games, we’re cooked because there’s zero chance sark benches him.

What is super concerning for me is that maybe we now know why arch wasn’t put in last year for a 50% injured quinn. This is what has me thinking it’s not a one game thing. Yesterday wasn’t a qb struggling against this elite defense. OSU will lose games this year if the other team can score. The defense was okay. We were worse than they were good. Hell, aggies using lsu reed would have scored more yesterday.

Something bigger feels off to me and I don’t normally leave bad games like this. Maybe it’s as simple as arch did this to arch vs the defense dictating it. Sark trying to mask it with they were elite at disguising coverage still is insufficient. With the exception of 2 drives late, his mechanics and throws were off all game regardless of coverage or pressure. Yeesh!

I guess OSU recievers suck too then and we know that's not the case

I get what you’re saying, I guess we’ll just have to wait till the Florida game to see if it’ll be an actual concern all season.

Sounds like people here was expecting UTSA Arch, come on man, be realistic. Arch didn't play great but he's going to be fine.

Personally I wasn’t expecting that, what I wasn’t expecting was missing easy throws. I think Sark did him no favors with his play calling is my biggest issue, it’s the same problems that stall the offense in general and in the redzone regardless if it was Thompson Card Quinn and now Arch.

So this is where I’m at week one. This is going to be an interesting year in college football. Yes arch struggled but he is a manning and will get better over the season. But after watching the games yesterday the QB’s across the country struggled not just arch. The Ohio state QB eh, Alabama QB was not good, Clemson QB played worse than arch in my opinion and he is a 4 year stater right? Penn state QB is a fraud I will die on that hill, Michigan QB eh, basically college football is going to be wild this year and I’m here for it 🤘

Let me stop you on Klubnik. That dude ran for his life from pressure.  LSU came after him constantly with blitzes from all over. Arch, OTOH, just flat missed guys on several occasions. Arch would have been sacked  by LSU so many times it wouldn’t have been funny. Clemson had no run game and their Oline isn’t anything special. Just keeping it real.

Seems we went broke not taking a profit yesterday

Honestly Arch tried multiple times and missed. I think he was just hyped up and gripping the ball tight yesterday

I don’t think Arch would have been sacked by LSU any more times than Klubnik, he’s just as mobile.

He might have thrown a lot more errant passes and been picked off more. But imo, Arch did a pretty good job avoiding sacks

I didn’t expect UTSA arch, but throwing 90 mph fastballs at the receivers feet is inexcusable no? Too many easy throws that were missed and missed badly. Not what you’d expect out of a guy with 3 years in the system
