Holy Bevo, those computer nerds generating the FPI at ESPN surely do love themselves some Texas football (and SEC in general). The 2025 FPI projections dropped today and it's a Longhorn fan's wet dream. Texas Longhorns are ranked # 1 with a 22.2% chance of winning the championship. Georgia # 2, Bama # 4. Whatever happened to Clemson and Penn State, one might ask? It gets better, believe it or not. Best offense? Texas, followed by Georgia and Bama. Best defense? You know by now - Texas, followed by Georgia and Bama. Somehow I think this might be skewed just slightly towards the SEC. Finally, "Most anticipated games of 2025 based on projected FPI ratings" Texas plays in the top 2 (@Georgia and @Ohio State), 3 of the top 6 (@Florida), 4 of the top 9 (A&M), 5 of the top 13 (Oklahoma), 6 of the top 24 (@Kentucky). This seems just a little crazy to me. But I'm hoping they are right, especially about the championship. Link to article on ESPN Top teams by 2025 FPI National Championship odds Rank Team Conf. Doesn't feel quite as bad coming in behind these athletic factories with easy academic standards who will let in ANYBODY who can row a boat. -

Kirby Smart was complaining that certain programs (USC obviously, Oregon, Tennessee, Miami) are getting recruits to commit quickly by offering $$ during their high school senior year. The number tossed around was $20K/month with stipulations that if you didn't stick to the commitment you had to pay the money back. Guessing a player as good as Bowman might warrant even more, right? Especially before the House settlement goes into effect. Just guessing, no insider knowledge ... but makes more sense than "I just want to grow the game of golf" oops, wrong sport - "We are taking over the city! All of the talent that’s here, we gotta bring it to USC". Yeah, OK.

Excellent post Lam. Good ideas with convincing examples - the comparison of Micah Hudson to Emmett Mosley especially. Post more please! -
If ND loses its matchup with USC
ArizonaLonghorn replied to Realist Horn's topic in On Texas Football Forum
True, but there were at least three other teams not named Notre Dame in last year's 12 team playoff who didn't play in a conference championship game. I can understand the loser of a conference championship game getting in, but if you're letting in teams ranked 3rd or lower in conference there's no reason to exclude ND. They already are barred from getting a top seed and a home game. (And I really detest ND, just pointing this out ... if you want to limit it to just teams who won or played in a CCG then OK, leave ND out, but otherwise I'd say let them scramble for an at large bid if their record and SOS is good enough.) The "No conference championship game involved" made more sense in a 4 team playoff, I feel. -
6'5" and 260 lbs before the 9th grade. Jeez

If ND loses its matchup with USC
ArizonaLonghorn replied to Realist Horn's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Not sure it's so much "trying to get out of it" as "trying to renegotiate the scheduling of it", moving off home-and-home in mid-October, which is the middle of USC's conference scheduling. Apparently all the travel east is weighing on the Trojans so they asked to either schedule the Notre Dame game earlier in the year or, on a four year rotation, play 2 in LA, one game in South Bend and one game at a neutral site closer to LA (Vegas maybe?). Something like that. A bit of a dick move since they can afford to give up the game more than Notre Dame can, but you can sorta see their point. Hard to feel sorry for USC since they joined a conference with teams in Maryland and New Jersey, so knew the travel would be brutal. Best guess - still play it but early in the season? Edit: good article on this topic in Sports Illustrated (where I got my ideas) - USC vs. Notre Dame Football Rivalry Must Continue -
Article in The Athletic "Ranking the 25 best college football games of the 2000s: Where do Texas-USC, Kick Six rank?" by David Ubben. Probably behind a paywall (link here) but sometimes you get a couple free ones each month. Looking at our two main SEC rivals Oklahoma played in two of those games (both in the Top Five). Shed a tear for our friends on the other side of the Red River because they lost both games, but still they made the list. Texas A&M played in one of those games - as usual, just outside the Top Twenty. Inexplicably they won it. Your Texas Longhorns played in four of the top 16 games, winning 3 of them. I'll admit that one of them was a bit of a surprise to me - recency bias? I won't spoil the ending as to which game was ranked # 1 but it's safe to mention that Vince Young was pretty damn good.

I agree with you on this. He seems pretty even handed about Texas even though I think he was the Colorado QB in the 70-0 beat down, right? The other guy I like is Josh Pate even though I think there are a lot of guys who don't like him. The list of guys I wouldn't listen to is lengthy but these two, to use your term, offer 'value added'.

Maybe Ojo LT, McKeogh RT, Turntine and Roseborough IOL would be the top 4 (if we are lucky) ? Would JT be ok with that? Thinking maybe not. Dunno, just guessing - we seem to have come from a long way back to vault in this kid's top 3. He's been a Penn State fan for a long time so he must really like something in the Texas offer to consider us this highly unless he's just trying to get the other 2 schools to ante up a bit in NIL

One more quote from the sporting press about the near-historic run of golf Scottie is on, this from the Athletic. This puts it in perspective (as many PGA wins since the run began as players #2,3,4 and 5 combined? Crazy) ---- Scheffler’s play since 2021 is golf’s most dominant stretch since Brooks Koepka’s four major wins in eight tries from 2017 to 2019. The difference is Koepka didn’t bother winning outside those majors. Scheffler? He has 12 non-major wins since 2022, including two Players Championships. At the risk of belaboring the numbers, and the absurdity, Scheffler’s 15 total individual PGA Tour wins since his first (2022 WM Phoenix Open) are as many as those of Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas — the official world golf ranking’s Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 players — combined. The only other players to win so much, so early? Tiger Woods (1996 to 1999) in 3 years, 32 days, and Jack Nicklaus (1962 to 1965) in 3 years and 45 days. Scheffler has done it in 3 years, 94 days.

Thinking a bit about this I thought several others had done it so did a little research. Here are a couple of lists, copied from this article If we focus only on 1900 and after, here are the youngest golfers to win a third major: (ten guys) 21 years old — Gene Sarazen 23 years old — Jack Nicklaus, Jordan Spieth 24 years old — Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones 25 years old — Rory McIlroy 26 years old — Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Peter Thomson 27 years old — Tom Watson Here are the youngest players to win three majors since 1934 (seven up to age 26, including current players Spieth (2nd youngest) and McIlroy) Jack Nicklaus, age 23: Nicklaus' third major was won when he was 23 years old, at the 1963 PGA Championship. He'd previously won the U.S. Open in 1962 (also his first PGA Tour win) and The Masters in 1963. He went on to win 15 more majors for a total of 18. Jordan Spieth, 23: Less than a week from turning 24, Spieth won the 2017 British Open for his third. Having already won Masters and U.S. Open titles, Spieth thus joined Nicklaus as the only golfers to win three different pro majors before turning 24. Spieth is still searching for his fourth. Tiger Woods, age 24: The 2000 U.S. Open (the one Tiger won by 15 shots) was Woods' third win in a major. He'd previously won the 1997 Masters and the 1999 PGA Championship. He went on to win 12 more majors for 15 total. Rory McIlroy, age 25: Having previously won U.S. Open and PGA Championship titles, McIlroy notched major victory No. 3 at the 2014 British Open. Just a few weeks later he added his fourth with another PGA crown, but he's been stuck on four major wins since that year. Seve Ballesteros, age 26: Seve just missed getting his third while still 25. He won the 1983 Masters two days after turning 26. He won another two after that for five total. Gary Player, age 26: The Black Knight won his third major at 26, as well, but was older than Seve. Player was 26 years, 8 months old at the time he won the 1962 PGA Championship. He went on to win another six majors, giving him nine total. Peter Thomson, age 26: Thomson was about a month shy of his 27th birthday when he won his third Open Championship title in 1956. He won five total, all at The Open.

Jordan Spieth has won the Masters and US Open (2015) and the British Open (2017). He is listed as born in 1993 so he was well under 28, right? I think Rory McElroy had four by that age (not going to look it up, but sounds right).

Former University of Texas golfers led after all four rounds - yes, Jhonattan Vegas (who led the first two rounds) was a Longhorn golfer in the early 2000's after immigrating from Venezuela. Worth mentioning that the softball team won 9-0 to advance to the Super Regional as well.

I was surprised to learn that Scottie Sheffler is actually second among Texas-ex golfers on the PGA leader board. Didn't know that the leader after rounds one and two, Jhonattan Vegas, was a Longhorn scholarship golfer in the early 2000's. Still pulling for Scottie though.

How the hell is an Oregon mod posting this before CJ or Bobby or Gerry? Huh?
