Makes him look younger. Also, the inevitable progression from a thinning pate to a solid bit of chin whiskers.

So true on your second thought.  Many guys that are clean shaven for years don't grow a goatee or some kind of beard until later in life when they start losing hair.  I did it another way.  I have had a beard since I was 18 and now have no hair on top and my beard and remaining hair are gray.
