It’s a problem for many. But that’s why there’s FCS, D2 and D3. One of my sons played at a D3 school and had a blast. I don’t think they even charged admission.

It's a shame, but that's where the sport is headed. With all the Legal uncertainty who knows where we will land, but the sport will be structurally very different from its roots.

That’s why they might go the way of Northern Iowa. It feels like they’re asking the state of Iowa to fund the NIL instead of the university.

Would there be penalties from the Big 4 if one of their institutions chose not to play the NIL game, and basically have a roster full of D 2 guys. They’re cool with going 0 - 12, and collecting 30 - 50 million in television revenue?

Iowa State should have been lobbying for collecting bargaining. That would have given them a chance. 

As it is, the SEC and Big Ten will choke them out.

To a certain extent, we’re headed toward a sorting out back to the way things were in the ‘60s, when many of the mid- and low majors now in D-I basketball played in the NAIA.

But the football change is what matters.

This is what competition does. In this case the competition is economic. Think about a real estate analogy. When the prices increase in a particular market, it reduces the number of potential buyers.

It’s interesting (to me) because Iowa State football has the top attendance of the historical Big 12 schools (post Texas, OU departures), and is second to only BYU when the new entrants are considered.

I completely understand the TV market perspective on ISU being the #2 school in a small farm state with no major TV local market, but it’s a shame for the fans who turn out to support a competitive school that they’ll soon be relegated out of big time college football.

If ISU were in the Big 10 West, they’d be competitive peers with ALL the other schools in that division (Iowa, Minn, Ill, Wiscy, Neb, NW, etc.)

When 61K is your stadium capacity it tells you a whole lot more about the conference than the school.

It makes a lot of sense because there are probably a couple dozen or so schools that are even profitable. Most break even or operate in the red.

I get your point, but I think vandy's capacity is 41k, MSST is 61k, ole Miss is 64k...

Relatively few make money. Most of D-I loses money. It’s marketing for the schools, so they look at it as an operating expense.
