    Couldn't have said it better, jkates. I wonder if in Sark's mind, giving up play-calling would be admitting defeat. He shouldn't look at it that way.

    And if Sark were to truly buy into doing it that way, I think it would be the best thing for him and Texas. Sark might not want to admit it, but I think his biggest strength as a head coach is assembling a staff and being the CEO. In the current climate of college football, you need a great CEO as head coach more than you need an X’s and O’s genius.

    Since we’re talking about this hypothetically (Sark isn’t giving up play-calling, so this is all moot), I want Sark to think back to when he and Lane Kiffin were at USC with Norm Chow. Sark is in the Norm Chow seat. Who’s the next up-and-coming, cutting-edge offensive mind Sark can elevate to the next level? I want Sark to do something similar to what Kirby Smart has done at Georgia. Mel Tucker, Dan Lanning and Glenn Schumann were all in their 30s when they started calling Smart’s defense and only Tucker had defensive play-calling experience before getting into that role at Georgia. Tucker and Lanning became head coaches after being the Georgia DC and Schumann is on his way. The Texas offense will always be Sark’s offense as long as he’s there. But I want Sark to find the next Sark, let him set the world on fire, take a head coaching job and then bring in the next guy who can follow the same path.

    That’s fair. I also don’t blame Sark for not trusting the punt team to execute.

    As crazy as it sounds, I think special teams. Scheme and personnel changes are much less nuanced than what need to be done to get the offense right.

    For me, in the OU game and that environment changes the calculus. The momentum shift of a missed FG or a failed fourth down could break your back. Punt, play defense and force OU to execute coming off its goal line.

    Field goal was my third choice. 1. Punt, play defense and play to get the ball last. Worst case, you take it to overtime. 2. Go for it 3. Field goal

    This is all fair. The offense is too talented and Sark is too good of a play designer for the lulls to last as long as they do and for the offense to be this boom or bust. 24 points, 382 total yards and 6.1 yards per play should’ve been enough to win the game. That’s not a bad showing against Oklahoma’s defense. But it’s not the production, it’s the fact this offense can’t bust a grape for about 2/3 of the game.

    FWIW, Littleton intercepted Julian Sayin on the Hail Mary at the end of the Ohio State game. I know Texas needs to force turnovers, but it’s hard for me to put a lot of fault on the defense when the offense and special teams handed Oklahoma 14 points.

    In all seriousness, the identity of the offense is living and dying with Arch's playmaking ability. It worked against Ohio State. It didn't work yesterday.

    Yes, Sark can get the offense to a level of play that, when paired with the caliber of defense Texas has, can allow you to go on a run. Whether he'll do those things is a different matter. Jermaine Bishop and Derrek Cooper need more touches. He's either got to use Arch's legs as a weapon and/or put things on the call sheet that can help Arch play from the pocket. He's got to figure out the run game concepts that work or that his personnel can execute and stick to those. It can happen. I'm just not confident that it will, because we've basically seen the same offense since the second quarter of the UTSA game. Special teams can be fixed either through scheme changes or personnel. Again, it looked worse after the bye week, so I'm not confident that they'll get it right in the kicking game.
