Root for chaos everywhere except Austin. That's basically the playoff strategy at this point. Every time I think I've figured out the SEC tiebreakers, somebody posts a new spreadsheet proving we're either 2nd, 7th, or somehow playing in the Sun Belt Championship.

Just got home from the game. First, the crowd was outstanding. Way louder than the Florida game. The fans in the stadium showed up. Second, this team has an incredible ability to turn a comfortable situation into a blood pressure test. Every time it feels like we're about to put somebody away, we spend a quarter trying to revive them. That third quarter was brutal. Third, I made the mistake of reading part of the game thread. Holy hell. Some of you don't actually watch Texas football hoping Texas wins. You watch hoping your favorite complaint gets validated. The second something goes wrong, you're sprinting to the keyboard like you've been training for it all week. Think about that. Texas wins, and your favorite part isn't the win. It's board politics. That's when you know some people have completely lost the plot. Criticize the coaches. Criticize the players. Criticize the third quarter. That's fair game. But if a Texas victory leaves you angry because it ruins your weekly doom-and-gloom routine, maybe you're more invested in being right than seeing Texas succeed. The crowd in DKR sounded like they wanted Texas to win. A chunk of the game thread sounded like they were rooting for evidence. The folks in the stadium were trying to help Texas win. The folks in the game thread were trying to win arguments they started three months ago. That's a pretty telling difference. 😏

I was at the Florida game, and let's be honest, the crowd wasn't exactly setting decibel records. The atmosphere definitely felt flat compared to Ohio State and even OU. So McConaughey isn't wrong about that part. What cracks me up is how many people read a letter that basically said, "Show up, be loud, support the team," and responded with: "RIP Sark." "It's never been more over." "Basketball starts soon." "Fire everybody." Criticizing the offense is fair. Criticizing Sark is fair. Criticizing Flood is fair. Lord knows there has been enough bad football lately to go around. But reading some of these posts, you'd think Texas was 3-9, recruiting had collapsed, Arch transferred to LSU at halftime, and Bevo entered the portal after the fourth quarter. The crowd and the team fed off each other. The offense couldn't sustain a drive, and the crowd gradually lost energy. Both things can be true at the same time. What I don't get is the dramatic jump from "the offense has serious issues" to "the Sark era is over." The man goes to back-to-back CFPs and suddenly some folks are conducting a funeral service after a couple bad weeks. Meanwhile McConaughey is sitting on a glacier in Iceland at 1 a.m. watching Texas football on one bar of cell service because he can't miss a game. Half this fan base is ready to transfer to basketball after the second three-and-out. Good grief. 🤘

Texas is probably the favorite on paper. Which is great news because I've watched enough Texas sports lately to know the championship game will not, in fact, be played on paper. Texas, OU, and Tech all look loaded. OU is still OU. Tech bought enough players to qualify as a small nation. Texas brought back stars and loaded up through the portal. The only thing I've learned from the football and volleyball seasons is that whenever I hear "this roster is stacked," I immediately start looking for the nearest emergency exit. For now I'm choosing optimism. By February I'll be booking my WCWS hotel. By April I'll be questioning every coaching decision. By May I'll be convinced we're winning it all again. The annual Texas fan migration pattern remains undefeated. 😂

Or we could win our remaining football games, go on to the playoffs, and win it all.....that would be nice.

Just read this thread, and it feels like we've reached the point where every offensive problem in the program has somehow been assigned to either Arch, Sark, the Mannings, Kyle Flood, or a secret conspiracy involving all four. The simplest answer is usually the right one. Arch has missed reads. The film shows it. The OL has had protection breakdowns. The film shows that too. Receivers have been open at times. The film shows that. The play calling hasn't always helped. We've all seen that. What I don't see is any evidence that Grandpa Archie is sitting in a dark room somewhere faxing play sheets to Sark and telling him, "Make sure my grandson never runs." What's funny is that half the board says Arch is secretly a dual-threat superstar being forced to play like Peyton Manning, while the other half says he can't process an RPO and was overrated from the start. Those two things can't both be true. Personally, I think the answer is a lot less dramatic. Arch is a talented QB who's playing like a talented QB that's struggling with pressure, speed of processing, and confidence right now. That happens. Quinn went through rough stretches. Most young quarterbacks do. The part that gets lost in all this is that if Arch was truly as bad as some are claiming, he wouldn't have had people begging for him to play for two years. And if he was as perfect as others claim, we wouldn't be watching film clips of missed blitzes and open receivers. Maybe the truth is that he's neither a bust nor a savior. Maybe he's just a young quarterback trying to figure it out while 100,000 offensive coordinators on the internet diagnose every snap. And for the record, if the Mannings really are controlling Texas' offense, they're doing a terrible job of getting their guy drafted. NFL teams tend to like quarterbacks who can identify blitzes and hit open receivers too. 😂

The conference has been flipping expectations upside down lately. What looked obvious a week ago suddenly wasn't so obvious by Saturday night. That's why some of these numbers this weekend feel like traps. Our matchup in Austin has my attention, but the road team from Knoxville getting less respect than expected might be the most interesting number on the board.

Arch hasn't even entered the portal and we've already got him at Ole Miss throwing for 5,000 yards and at LSU beating Texas out of spite. 😂 At this rate, by next week he'll have won the Heisman at both schools, claimed two national titles, and be giving his Hall of Fame induction speech. Meanwhile, back here in reality, he's still Texas' quarterback. 🤷‍♂️🏈

So now the standard for "developed" is being a top-7 NFL pick? That's a pretty convenient moving target. Quinn arrived at Texas coming off limited playing time, won a conference championship, made the Playoff, improved his command of the offense, improved his decision-making, and left as an NFL draft pick. If that's "not developed," then a whole lot of college coaches around the country would love to fail that way. That's confusing draft position with player development. Not every 5-star becomes a top-7 pick. The question is whether Quinn left Texas better than he arrived. Unless we're pretending the Quinn from his first season and the Quinn from his final season were the exact same player, the answer is pretty obvious.

Quinn didn't get developed? He arrived as a talented but inconsistent QB and left as a conference champion, playoff quarterback, and likely NFL draft pick. Was he perfect? No. Did he still miss throws? Sure. But saying he wasn't developed at all is revisionist history. And it's okay to admit Arch hasn't played well lately without pretending every issue on offense is Sark, Milwee, or Flood
