AUSTIN, Texas – Even though No. 11/8 Texas Tech brought the reigning USA Softball Player of the Year NiJaree Canady to Red & Charline McCombs Field for this weekend's Bevo Classic, it was Texas sophomore right-hander Teagan Kavan who was stealing the headlines in the Longhorns' 2-1, nine-inning win over the Red Raiders. The nearly-three-hour game followed a brief 1-hour, 38-minute 13-4 UT five-inning win over Maryland earlier in the afternoon. Just hours after a quartet of Longhorns – Kayden Henry, Katie Stewart, Leighann Goode and Vanessa Quiroga – all blasted home runs longer than 236 feet spark the team's third run-rule victory of the year, it was time for Kavan and Canady to face off for the third time since May 30, 2024. And much like the two occasions at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, it was Kavan and the Longhorns that bested Canady and her squad. Despite allowing a two-out run in the top of the fourth, the first run she's allowed against Canady's team in 17.2 consecutive innings, the Longhorns answered right back with a two-out double down the left field line off the bat of Mia Scott to score Ashton Maloney, who led off the inning with a double of her own, from second. Up until Joley Mitchell scored the game-ending run on a fielder's choice and throwing error by Texas Tech, Kavan was putting on a full pitching display for everyone watching. Throughout the game's nine innings, the sophomore right-hander struck out at least one Red Raider batter in each inning, while recording all three outs of an inning via strikeout on three separate occasions. At one point, Kavan retired five straight batters – and six of seven – via swinging strikeouts. By the time she had thrown her 147th pitch to strike out Makayla Garcia and end the top of the ninth, Kavan had run her strikeout total to 18, the most by a Texas pitcher since Cat Osterman struck out 18 Arizona State batters in seven innings of work on June 1, 2006 in the Women's College World Series. The 18 strikeouts by Kavan also tied her with former Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins for the most strikeouts by a Mike White pitcher after Hawkins fanned 18 in a 10-inning contest at UNLV on Feb. 14, 2014. Fortunately, we were able to come out in the end with a couple of nice base hits and then Vic (Hunter) coming up with that game-ending at bat." We were locked in. Before the ninth started, Leighann (Goode) and Joley (Mitchell) came up to me and said, 'We got this. You get through this, we have your back,' so I knew once we got through the top of the ninth, we had this." GAME NOTES By being credited with one hit in each of Texas' games on Friday, Ashton Maloney extended her season-opening hitting streak to eight consecutive games, becoming the only Longhorn student-athlete to be credited with at least one hit every game so far this season. With Texas' win over Maryland, the Longhorns are now 26-3 all time in home-opening softball games over its 29-year history. UT has won its last 11 consecutive home-opening contests and has not lost the first home game of a season under current head coach Mike White. As a result of getting hit by a pitch against Maryland, Reese Atwood has now been hit by a pitch 15 times throughout her career on the Forty Acres, which is tied with Kaitlyn Washington (2017-21) and Brejae Washington (2011-14) for eighth on the program's career hit by pitch list. With her double off of Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady in the bottom of the fifth inning, Mia Scott tied Taylor Thom (2011-14) for fifth on the program's career doubles list with 43. By earning two walks against Maryland pitching, Mia Scott now has 81 career walks, passing Mary Iakopo (2019-22) for 10th on the program's career walks list. In four career appearances against NiJaree Canady's team, Texas' Teagan Kavan has allowed just one run in 23.2 innings pitched. Against Kavan in pitching-versus-batting matchups, Canady is 0-2 with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Kavan's first strikeout of Canady – on three pitches to end the top of the sixth – was the sophomore's 13th of the game, which reset her single-game career high. UP NEXT Texas (8-0) will look to run its winning streak to double digits when the Longhorns take on UMass (3-4) at 4 p.m., before taking on Maryland (4-3) at 6:30 p.m. during the second day of the Bevo Classic hosted by UT.

Canady also pitched extremely well as usual.
