The biggest impact on game outcome Texas v Ohio State

Both teams have young unproven OLs and QBs.   Ohio State is stronger at WR.   Push at TE.   Texas has edge at RB.   Downs may be a great single player in the secondary but Texas has the superior overall defense.   

All that said, i keep coming back to the most obvious difference between the two teams is coaching staff continuity.   Ohio State has highly unproven new play caller (and scheme designer), new OL coach, new def coordinator and several other new coaches on defense.   With the exception of our secondary and RB coach (plus addition of new coach for the DEs) we have a MASSIVE advantage rage in coaching continuity.

While our players should play loose and fast, knowing the system inside and out, Ohio State may take 4-6 games into the season before players and coaches feel confident in system. 

Predicting Texas goes down early then makes adjustments and wins by 10 points 34-24, despite the Buckeyes home field advantage.   Coaching continuity by OC and DC are the biggest reasons for game 1 win.

My bonus prediction is that Texas v Ohio State rematch happens again in semifinals this year as both teams ascend during back half of season.   Texas beats Ohio State in semifinals rematch this year, double OT, 38-35.   Texas goes on to play Penn State for national championship.

Why do people keep saying our OL is young? You have 3 guys going into their 4th year, another into his 3rd and the last into his 2nd? That hardly seems young to me. Some inexperience? Yes but for the most part not very young. 

As for the defensive staff at Ohio State, my recollection is that only the DC is new and they retained pretty much everyone, except the coach we took from them. Their D has some really good players but I don't know that it's close to what it was last year and obviously a new guy at the helm leading the D.

Offensively, I think their OL is going to take longer to gel than ours. A couple of transfers from what I remember and they still aren't set on guys at their positions or even a group as a whole. A QB who hasn't played much, good RB's but not anywhere near what they had last year. 

The one area they most likely out shine us is WR and TE. Not that Endries is bad, but we wanted Klare first. If not for the proximity to home, he might be in burnt orange. 

As for a score, I'm not real good with those. Maybe we return the favour and win 28-14? Don't know if Texas goes down early, but who really knows. Tough road game environment, against a very high quality opponent.

We have the better QB, defense, and coach. I like our odds. 
 

also looks like this game will be played in the low 80’s. That’s going to feel like the AC is on for Texas.

Biggest impact? 
1. Texas defense. Should be the best unit on the field matched up against a young qb in his first game in a new system. I’ll be shocked if Ohio State scores in the 20s or higher. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see a defensive score. 
2. Turnovers. This could negate #1. Texas needs to hold on to the ball

All I know is their line has to block our DLine and I don’t see it happening. Sayin will be harassed all game.

Ohio State does not have a young unproven OL. They return their three starting IOL from the championship run last season as well as the their top two backups. LT is looking like it will be Austin Serieveld and RT will be Ethan Onianwa who has started many games at Rice.

You guys can speak on Texas’ side of things but for Ohio State, how the QB performs is the best predictor on if Ohio State can/will win or not.

Ohio State’s WR, TE, and OL is championship caliber on offense. Ohio State’s LB & secondary are championship caliber on defense.

The running backs and defensive line will be good to very good.

It is all on Julian Sayin/Lincoln Keinholtz

I have no doubt Julian Sayin will eventually be an elite QB, but is he good enough right now to beat the #1 team in the country with an elite defense?

How c an you say the OL is championship caliber when you're replacing 4 starters yourself? Plus you had transfers come in there? Your WR and TE, I agree with. But as you said, you're an Ohio State guy so you're going to say those things, similar to how we are.

Ohio State is replacing two starters on their OL, not 4. LT Donovan Jackson and RT Josh Fryar,

LG Luke Montgomery, C Carson Hinzman, and RG Tegra Tshabola all return. It appears as if Austin Siereveld who has been in the program for 3 years already will be LT, and Ethan Onianwa was one of the most sought after transfers from Rice at RT.

Is this why so many people are confused on why Ohio State is favored? Do people really think Ohio State is replacing 4 offensive linemen?

Last year, Ohio State's OL blocked for two experienced backs who are both now in the NFL.  Henderson was a stud.  Along with Howard's scrambling they gained 81 net yards on the ground against us in the Cotton Bowl.  Peoples lacks game experience, Sayin is not supposed to be much of a runner, and the last time Donaldson played against us he got knocked out of the game.  If their OL is so much more improved than last year then so be it, but our DL is pretty wide and pretty deep.

I’m not necessarily saying Ohio State’s OL will be better than last season, just that there shouldn’t be any drop off. Ohio State’s OL can be one of the best in the country and still lose the battle to Texas’ front 7, they are that good lol

It’s not unlike UT’s situation. The narrative is that Texas is replacing 4 starters, which is true technically speaking. But LT Trevor Goosby filled in for an injured Kelvin Banks during Texas’s key stretch of games against A&M, Georgia, and Clemson. So he has been battled tested and looked awesome. Cole Hutson replaces Jake Majors at C, but Hutson started several games his freshman year and played heavily at RG last year. The only two players with limited starting or playing experience are at LG (a senior) and RT (RS freshman 5-star). So the notion that Texas is replacing 4/5 starters and is young at OL is definitely a misconception. The key will be whether this line gels as well as last year’s.

I'm counting on our punter to keep them backed up all day. Games like this can be decided by who has the better kicking game.

I just don’t think our offense will be clicking on all cylinders right out the gate against an opponent like ohio state. I see a defensive, special teams and who can have the least turnovers type of game to see who wins it.

Punting and field goal kicking wise, Ohio State really isn’t anything special. Not horrible, but if the game came down to a field goal I would not be confident
