Potential Next Route for Portal CB

Texas is still hot in pursuit of former Washington CB Jabbar Muhammad, however as Bobby mentioned earlier this afternoon, the Oregon Ducks are positioned to take the pole position with Muhammad now in Eugene.

Now, if Muhammad does decide to join the Ducks, there is another name from another program to keep an eye on.

Jim Harbaugh is reportedly headed to Los Angeles today for a 2nd in-person interview with the Chargers. A deal is within "strikiing distance" per Zach Barnett of FootballScoop.

Should Harbaugh depart, a name passed on to me to keep an eye on in regards to a possible portal entry is CB Will Johnson.

Johnson was the Defensive MVP of the National Title game and a former five-star prospect out of Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

Would be an incredible pick up, but I have a feeling Harbaugh leaving Michigan will not be remotely close to Saban leaving Alabama in terms of portal players. Michigan will elevate Sherrone Moore to HC who has proven to be more than competent during Harbaugh's suspensions and the players absolutely love him.

I agree. However, if the DC also leaves, which is what is predicted, then I think that side of the ball might take a slight hit.

If Harbaugh leaves; and, they don't promote Moore, I still don't expect to see the carnage that we saw with Alabama's roster. Michigan doesn't have the depth of Blue Chip recruits on their roster that Alabama, Georgia and now Texas have. They don't recruit to the level of Ohio State either. So, the guys on their roster aren't seeing as difficult a path to the field as these other schools. They also aren't sacrificing NIL and early playing time to be coached by Nick Saban and having that four lane freeway to the NFL. It also feels to me like there's just a little bit more loyalty on the Michigan roster than there was with Alabama.

Guys if Harbaugh waits another week to announce he is leaving (which I think he will do) wouldn't that make the 30 day portal window for Michigan players to transfer mostly invalid since the window to enroll for the spring semester at other schools like Texas will be closed after Jan 30?

It would only make them ineligible to transfer to Texas this month (by Jan. 30). But it allows the players to go into the portal immediately with their current school already on the hook for this semester's scholarship.

Will Johnson is from Michigan and his father played for the Wolverines from 1990-1994. It is not a guarantee he enters the portal should Harbaugh leave, but again, his name did come up in a recent conversation and a player of his stature is absolutely worth monitoring.

Where do I sign up - and maybe he can bring one of his DT/DL friends.

Did Texas keep enough powder dry to land a player like that?

Don’t forget schools that use the quarter system

Considering that they are going to more than likely promote Moore almost immediately after Harbaugh departs, is it really that conceivable for that many kids to leave UM?

Not like at Bama. But I think it's possible there is some, especially on D.

Mason Graham and he is a bona fide 1st rounder.

I saw where it’s been reported that Texas might have to go in a different direction than Rod Wright. You think it’s possible they may turn their focus to Mike Elston now that it looks like Harbaugh is on his way out? If so, he’s got a couple DTs in Graham and Grant that could do well at Texas.

I don't know that Rod Wright was ever "the" guy. It's been thought he might be but I never wrote he was definitively it.

Given that nothing has happened as yet, I kind of doubt it was him as the no. 1 choice. Wright had his annual post-season meeting with Demeco Ryans yesterday, so he'd be ready to go if it was him.
