Meh. The headlines are fun, but these things always take negotiation and settlement. The headline is more dramatic than the reality of the situation.

There are no negotiations, unless they are firing him for cause, which is looks like they completely messed up that process, then Kelly is owed the full buyout amount to be paid in the manner in which the contract stated. LSU and their officials thought they'd be able to negotiate a smaller deal, that is failure on them. Now they are back tracking trying to find ways to reduce that payout.

Technically you are probably correct.  But you can never forget that the party is in Louisianna.  It will probably have an LSU alum as judge and everyone in the jury wearing purple and gold.  This will not be an issue of Spanish law..................this will be LSU law.

What a cluster f.  Will make it difficult to attract a top tier coach when you try to f-over the last coach.  They are going to end up hiring a guy like Joe Brady, as they can buy with a bargain price without much buy-out.   Could be a home run, but could also be a dud.  Always a bigger risk to hire a first time head coach, especially at top 10 program.

LSU clearly fired BK for performance. LSU acted hastily initially and now stupidly as it relates to the for cause clause in the agreed upon contract.  LSU appears untrustworthy and vile.

If I'm a head coach or agent I'm not doing a deal with LSU unless the upfront money, buyout and terms look even more in my favor than the BK deal.

LSU is a dumpster fire and clown show. LSU money donors should feel dissapointment and disgust in their program and this very embarrassing and costly process.

I think big buyouts are going away, and there will be quite a few someone’s willing to deal with the wild expectations and fertile recruiting grounds  at LSU for just $7-8M per year.

Buyouts aren't going anywhere if Jimmy Sexton has anything to say about it. LSU is embarrassing themselves. Pay the man and move on.

I’m sure Tom Herman and Charlie Strong are available for $7m/yr not guaranteed.  LSU isn’t getting Kiffin or anyone close if they are going to play this game.  Make sure you have plenty of popcorn, this is probably a double feature.

Too simplistic a call. Among top tier coaching prospects at solid P4 schools looking to step up to a destination job, they’ll get significant guarantees. For G5 coaches and hot coordinators, they’ll take more favorable deals. So the Kiffins, Cignettis, Lannings, etc, will get the guaranteed deals, or leverage their existing schools for better guarantees. Guys like Fisher and Franklin, who already have sweetheart buyouts, will be less demanding.
