Highschooler First Time in Austin

Hey guys! I am very excited cause I’m heading out to Austin for the first time this upcoming weekend for the Arkansas game. I’ll be up there for a few days and know there is a lot of dedicated fans and alumni on this site so I thought I would send this out, and ask for any cool suggestions or tips to make this trip the best. This is probably the only time I’ll ever be down unless obviously end up attending so I just want to make it the best I can. My dad went there but it’s been a bit so thought I would send a lil thing out on here. Thanks!!

I get in Saturday late morning so like right before the game. Then I’m there until Tuesday afternoon.

Cota has their christmas light display called peppermint parkway, you can ride the rollercoaster or drive on the track there for an extra fee

So many things to do in Austin if you’re gonna be there that long.

Just some things I might do:

- Eat at the original Kerbey Lane for breakfast or go to the one next to campus. Get the pancakes.

- Go look around Bevo Blvd before the game. Then come to our tailgate before the game.

- Go to a good Tex Mex place for dinner.

- Check out downtown, South Congress, and Lake Austin/Lady Bird Lake.

- Maybe go up and see Mount Bonnell. Great views of the lake.

- Not sure how big of a music fan you are or if this is even a thing anymore for someone your age, but I try to stop by Waterloo Records at least once every couple of months.

One of the great things I love to do is just drive around and see different parts. You can go 30 minutes and start getting into the Hill Country, too.

Ditto on what Bobby said. especially "Maybe go up and see Mount Bonnell." That's where George A. Custer used to take his wife Libby for picnics while they were stationed in Austin. Go walk through the state capital building if you've never done it before. I'm afraid I can't be of much use on places to eat as I expect most of my favorite places no longer exist. Walk across campus and visit the Co-Op on Guadalupe. Have your picture taken in front of the Littlefield fountain. I remember when Arkansas fans would throw red food coloring in it, so be on guard!

If you're into nature go check out Austin Greenbelt - Barton Creek.

It's truly a beautiful area of nature with great trails, places to swim and explore. It shows the versatility of the city!

Find a rooftop restaurant downtown is my best suggestion.

Breakfast tacos are legit, Juan in a Million, Tacos Amaya, find a food truck on S. Lamar.

Walking through campus is awesome, try to get into Gregory Gym to take a look around.  Tell them you're considering attending after graduation.

LBJ Library for the museum exhibits.

Zilker Park in the mornings or evenings, Austin has so many parks.

If you go out to Mt. Bonnell, grab a coffee and sit next to Lake Austin over at Mozart’s. There’s a couple fun restaurants over there on the water, too.

P6 is in The Line Hotel — nice rooftop restaurant with a great sunset view of the river and rolling hills.

Oh and if you travel SW out to Driftwood — Hays City Store. Can’t recommend the blackened pork chop enough.

Magnolia Cafe > Kerbey Lane 👀

Matt’s El Rancho is a great experience, never know what Longhorns you may see there on any given day.

Taco Joint for breakfast tacos (2 locations, one near campus and one on west riverside dr)

I’m not sure if the Christmas lights are already up, but if not Zilker Park is worth checking out.

Grab a slice of pizza at the window at Home Slice....get the Mexican vanilla at Amy's Ice Cream, both have locations on South Congress.

The Magnolia on Lake Austin was my go-to spot for years before they closed it down because of covid 😤

Chicken S**t Bingo at Ginnys Longhorn Saloon on Burnet Rd. Every Sunday evening. Google it. It's like a backyard party with a good band.  

As a first timer you definitely need to allocate as much time as you can for Bevo Blvd. pre-game.

Trying to think of fun stuff to do not involving having a cold snack lol! 
 

I'd say go check out Zilker w/ Christmas lights up, wander around campus. Go to Posse East for a burger by campus. Pool Burger right on Lake Austin Blvd during the day. Definitely shop at the Coop and buy something cool. Usually have some exclusive merch. Wander around the tailgates and if your Dad is going, swing by the alumni center pregame.

Yeah thanks for asking… Still here for another day but it’s been awesome so far. Sadly with everything taking a long time I just made the game on time so didn’t get to do much before…  but the game was awesome and got a picture with “Big Red” the super fan who’s always on the screen. I just had magnolias which was really good, and had Terry Black’s last night which made any BBQ I’ve ever had in Jersey seem silly, yesterday got to tour the capitol and go to Mozarts (which they were really busy from a Christmas event but was a total miss). Today finally getting to check out the school, looking forward to it.
